OK, the decade thread got me to thinking... who's the greatest blind musician? For the purpose of this poll, I'm intentionally leaving out folks who became blind in their later years, like Bach and Ella. For this poll, the musician has to have overcome blindness during their prime. I thought about including John Kay of Steppenwolf, but he does have some sight. Hard to go against the bluesmen, but I'm voting for Stevie. The albums in the early-mid 70's were awesome in the truest sense of the word.
You can't cut across musical genres like that. Best blind blues musician - Blind Lemon Jefferson Best blind R&B musician - Ray Charles Best blind R&B songwriter - Stevie Wonder
I have to go with Stevie. Frankly, I think his ability to play many different instruments (very well, I might add) along with his ability to play pretty much any genre of music on those instruments makes this poll not even close. The work "gifted" is thrown around WAY too much, but I think it truly applies in Stevie's case.
i would agree 100% with you if ray charles weren't part of the poll. we're talking Ray Charles Robinson.
I picked Stevie Wonder because of his early '70s albums but one name that was left off was Blind Willie Johnson, one of the greatest blues/gospel singers of all-time.
