    Rockets Practice Report (Rose Garden)

It was a humbling experience being in the same gyms as 2 of the top 4 NBA coaches in the same morning.

Rick Adelman, chest and back hair protruding from his sweat suit, gold chain hanging, took this morning's news that Mike Brown was Coach of the Year in stride. Coach Adelman got jokes. Namely, "I always say if Jerry Sloan hasn't won it there's something wrong with that award."

Adelman went street corner wistful philosopher on the media for a moment, "I'm coaching in the highest league you can coach in. I've been doing it for 18 years. Never in my wildest dreams [did I think I would be here]... I thought I'd be at a community college or a small college my whole life." But, he was careful to note on mulitple occasions, "Attention is just not something I need [as a coach]."

Adelman briefly traced his ego-free approach to managing his teams back to his days as a player: "I never liked playing for a guy that seemed like he was in there with an ego or ripping you for no reason. You need to treat everyone differently and they will respond to you. I've seen guys lose their jobs because they were so rigid. It made no sense to me. That's not healthy."

Adelman's approach was evident in all of his players this morning. The Rockets again appeared as a loose bunch, engaging in various competitions as they waited for the media availability period to pass. Pictured below is Von Wafer nailing a lefty pull-up runner; just moments before, he threw down a lefty reverse dunk that impressed both his teammates and the assembled cameramen.

The Rockets are confident and care-free.

Their media star was Ron Artest, who recounted his first playoff experience with a wry smile on his face, "My first time in the playoffs, I didn't play great at all. I was in Indiana, I was nervous, I didn't know what I was doing. I was tired, gave in to fatigue. Just like everybody, well, not Derrick Rose, he had 36 points in his first year in the league, I don't know how he did that."

Does Portland still present a challenge to the Rockets? In Ron Ron's eyes, absolutely, "It's like poker as long as you have chips, you're still in it."

Perhaps the line of the day was Ron's quip, "As players we just want to play. We don't really care about scouting reports."

Go ahead and add that to the list of things I've not heard said by a Blazer this year.

    Blazers Practice Report (Practice Facility)

Nate McMillan also took the news of his Coach of the Year success in stride but, given the stakes tomorrow night for his Blazers, he didn't allow himself the philosophical tangent that we heard from Adelman. Nate said simply, "My vote was for Mike to win it" and "as far as me being fourth, I'm alright with that." He also complimented Coach Adelman by saying, "Rick is proven. He's been a good coach for a long time and he's won everywhere he's been."

In the context of Saturday's aftermath, it's not surprising that Nate was more willing to talk about what adjustments the team would be making rather than how he fared in the Coach of the Year rankings. Nate pointed to adding "movement to the offense" as a key tomorrow night and challenged his players to bring a stronger mental toughness to the game, "One thing we've got to do is compete... We know we can play better than we played and we know we've got to play better."

Brandon expected the team to present more defensive looks for Yao Ming, stating that the team would mix things up, playing LaMarcus on him, doubling down when Greg or Joel was on him, and generally trying to keep Yao off balance. Adelman actually made the comment this morning that, "I don't know who can play [Yao] one on one consistently. He's a very, very tough cover. I think they are just trying to find out what works." Those words kept repeating in my head as Brandon and Nate described how to stop the 7'6" giant.

I'm not sure they've found out what will work yet.

Brandon also opened up today about what appeared to be bothering him on Saturday night and, to a lesser degree, at practice yesterday. He stated, "Our guys were a little nervous. A little star struck by the playoff thing... We played like a soft, young team... we didn't play aggresive. We didn't play loose. We almost played like a team that was afraid.."

It was asked, "Was there anything positive to take from yesterday?" Brandon just shook his head, "Honestly there was nothing positive. I couldn't take anything positive from that loss. We got it handed to us... There wasn't anything good about that. They kicked our butt."

As for tomorrow night, Brandon said, "It's going to be physical. It's going to be some hits. I'm just ready to go... Must win. Big game. Whatever you want to call it, it is what it is."

Perhaps the most interesting comments from Brandon today concerned his impressions of LaMarcus: "I think he played into the whole playoff thing, the whole playoff hype. He looks like he's more focused now. If I know LaMarcus, he can't wait to respond."

Brandon and LaMarcus seemed like polar opposites on the court Saturday and with their reactions at practice yesterday, so it was particularly interesting to hear Brandon apparently admit that he thinks LaMarcus might have been swept up.

It feels like a strange thing for a 3rd year player to say about another 3rd year player.

Of course, Brandon isn't your run of the mill 3rd year player.

The Blazers are going attack the rim very early and Roy and Aldridge will be very aggressive, and the Rockets will have to withstand the early charge of the Blazers. Yao will be attacked, they will take the ball at him to get him in foul trouble and he will get fronted when he is on offense. I hope Adleman is proactive and expects these things and coaches the team out of the barage that the Rockets are going to face. GO Rockets!

Let's faced it...Brandon can't do much when Artest or Shane is on him. That's why he keeps doing pick n roll. Anyone can freeze themselves up with pick n roll...but as far as one on one matchup against Artest...i don't think he can do a damm thing. Same with other superstars like Kobe and Lebron. Beating Artest in pick n roll don't count! Do you ever see Brandon posting up Artest?? Never! Why? Because you know he can't do much against Artest.

So when he talk about being physical...what?? With Artest guarding you, you can outphysicaled someone that is physical than you.

Portland will come out with energy and guns a blazing (no pun intended). The Rockets have to weather the early storm, manage to keep the game close, and win it in the second half. With a young team, their confidence can fluctuate pretty easily. Once they get hot, they'll be clicking on cylinders. The Rockets need to demoralize them with crushing blocks and rim rattling dunks and suffocating defense.

Well that is how Brandon Roy always play...his whole offensive game relies on the pick and roll..and he is AMAZING at it.

Much like on Saturday, tonight's game will be won based off team defense. I know the Rockets are a better defensive team but if we don't allow the Trailerblazers to go off, we can get it. But no matter what it is one game, the rockets should treat it as such and not worry to much about the future or thinking that this will be the death toll for the Blazers.

Artest did an OK job on Roy, but not great. He needs to fight through the pick and roll a little better. I also remember Roy blowing by him a couple times for a layup (he didn't make all of them, at least).

someone from blazersedge wrote this? it's not very well written.

the blazers are mixing it up by doubling down when pryzbilla and oden are on yao, then putting aldridge on him? i hope this is their defensive scheme for tonight! even if aldridge fronts yao he will be too tired on offense to do anything.

they want more ball movement on offense, but it was putting yao in a pick and roll that was so effective last game. seriously, i think nate is a better coach than this, but lets hope that's the game plan because i predict another victory if it is.

Nice report, I still think if Rockets can win the second game the series will be pretty much over since I expect Rockets to win at least one game at home.

Also expect Blazers to come out really aggressive and offensive. I hope Rockets don't get shocked.

Im a UT fan so I saw quite a bit of LaMarcus in college. In big games he had a tendency to disappear. Not every big game, but quite a few. He didn't seem to like rough post play. Any other UT fans remember him that way?

Blazersedge always produces quality articles unlike most major sports outlets that produce garbage with made up numbers to justify itself.

Yep. Of course I wasn't really impressed with him at all in college.

    Full Court Press

    by Ben from blazersedge

Jason Quick gets Steve Blake's side of Game 1.

Blake bristled at the notion that one of his mistakes in Game1 was repeatedly allowing Brooks to zip past him. The Blazers play team defense, Blake and coach Nate McMillan noted, and many of Brooks' points were simply breakdowns by the team.

"Some points were on me, some on other guys, and some he scored because of a defensive scheme and he just beat it," Blake said. "But I take it personally if he blows by me."

How many times did Blake feel that happened in Game 1?

"He probably beat me, I don't know, probably three times," Blake said. "But he didn't blow by me. I cut him off and he hit step-back jumpers, which you can't do much about."

Joe Freeman looks at LaMarcus Aldridge's struggles and the necessary bounce-back tonight.

From the first Blazers' possession, when Aldridge backed Luis Scola down on the block and attempted a shot -- only to be emphatically blocked by Yao -- it was a night to forget for the Blazers' third-year power forward. The Rockets seemed to focus their defense on clogging the paint and shutting down Aldridge, bringing Yao from behind to double team or having guards slither in from the wing to add support.

Aldridge was unable to respond to the extra attention, often forcing bad shots or holding the ball too long and stalling the Blazers' offense. Aldridge, who averaged a team-high 23.3 points against the Rockets in the regular season, watched game film by himself Saturday night and Sunday and again with the team on Monday and didn't like what he saw.

Geoffrey C. Arnold looks at the long friendship between Aaron Brooks and Brandon Roy.

"I remember him making game-winning shots on me in the third grade," Roy said. "I still get mad about that."

The two have been friends since childhood, but that friendship has been suspended because of the renewal of a rivalry that has existed since those days growing up in Seattle.

The key is making Roy and Aldridge play D consistently, which means putting them in PnR and post ups with Artest/Shane or Scola/Landry. Defense requires more effort than offense. That's why Blake didn't play well, AB was hitting shots and running him into Yao or Scola all night long. According Blaked played like zero.

Don't take quick shots force them to run threw screens, under screens, bump into the post. I liked Gato's and Lowry's D on Sergio... no free 3's or drives to the bucket.

Really need to focus on stopping penetration, which get's Yao in trouble when comes to help. He did get jobbed on the Rodriguez charge.
