http://www.oregonlive.com/blazers/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/sports/1215055511213950.xml&coll=7 Paull Allen has indicated he is going to spend big in free agency next year. It will be their last opportunity to spend over the MLE since the contract extensions of Roy, Aldridge, etc will put them over the cap in 2010 and beyond.
After this season they will know where to spend. The expiring contracts of Francis/LaFrentz/Blake will free up $35MM. My guess is SF will be their biggest need. But if Roy, Aldridge, Fernandez, Bayless and Oden do what I think they will do, the Blazers may not need to grab a high-dollar free-agent next summer.
So I take it he is another Mark Cuban, except he leaves basketball decisions to people who understand basketball? Damn, the Blazers are really lucky to have such an owner. We should screw the Blazers over for robbing us of Roy by signing Miles to a minimum contract at the end of the season.
If your a team who has a decent player off contract and you hear Portland is a likely destination for him.....signing Miles would be a smart move.
I wonder what would be the consequences. Miles earned what, 10 million a season? That would be a huge blow to any team. If someone does that to Portland, I can see Portland never dealing with that team again, as well as doing everything to get back at them. Kings still don't want to deal with the Lakers because they were rivals 5 years ago, this would be much more serious.
So if a team signs Miles, will they have to pay him whatever was on the Blazers contract or can they just sign him for the minimum? This is a serious opportunity for a team to screw over the Blazers in a big way.
It would make for a great story. Not only seeing one team get screwed like that, but knowing that another team did it on purpose.
well the blazers did screw us up... but the fact that we could get webster/outlaw for battier, makes me not want to sign miles. what team doesn't like the blazers? we should call memphis and tell them we'll give them cash consideration if they play miles for 10 games.
That team is gonna have the highest payroll in the league in a few years. It will be a question if all of those players deserve MAX deals.
Why just "screw" Portland when we can use the threat of signing Miles to extort them into a lopsided trade? "Give us Rudy Fernandez or else."
So what if Miles gets his stuff together, gets healthy, and can actually contribute to a team? Should the team not improve, or should he decide not to play ball because of the Blazers cap situation? Kinda unfair huh?
Lmao lets play Miles for 5 seconds for 10 games like for in-between free throws if they dont comply to our trade demands for Rudy Fernandez
Then the Blazers should blame the doctor who declared Miles' career to be over......or themselves, for coercing the doctor's decision.
It says the Blazers will pay Miles the remainder of his contract, but it just won't count against the cap unless he plays that 10 game minimum before it expires. So, it looks to me like any team can sign him to a minimum deal or just a couple of 10 day contracts in order to screw the Blazers, or more specifically to hold them hostage. It really would be funny if the Rockets gave Miles two 10 day contracts, played him 5 seconds each in 9 games, and then called the Blazers asking for a trade of Luther Head for Rudy Fernandez, or at least Sergio Rodriguez. Especially if the Rockets played Miles in the next game anyway
if even half the players on the blazers turn out to be any good, they're still gonna be the new york knicks 2.0 when it comes to spending..
Why would Miles want to come anywhere near a gym? he never really liked playing ball. he gets paid either way.
What are his incentives to: 1) Drop quite a bit of weight and get his body back into NBA playing shape. 2) Rehab the knee so it will enable him to play in the NBA 3) Stop doing offcourt activities that get him in trouble with the NBA. If he were to accomplish all of that, he would still be a Fringe player bouncing around the NBA for a low salary because of his knee and legal issues over the years. Based on his lack of desire to maintain his weight close to what it was when he played, it is very doubtful that Miles will have the Fire to accomplish the things needed to be able to play in the NBA again. Unless he wants to play in the NBA and do what is needed to get there, then the Machinations to hurt Portland are pointless.
