There are plenty of reasons these children are bypassed; most of them are rooted in racism. Fortunately, a growing number of white people in countries such as Canada, Germany, France and the Netherlands are turning to the United States to adopt African-American children, a trend prompted by the lack of available children for adoption in these countries. The cost and wait time for adopting African-American children is much lower than that of white children. It can take as long as five years and as much as $40,000 to adopt a Caucasian child. For African-American children, it can be a matter of weeks or months and cost between $10,000 and $12,000. (Interestingly, fees for Americans to adopt international children can reach $30,000 and the process can take nine to 18 months.) Lack of interest of Americans in adopting African-American children has created a healthy supply of newborns—the often sought-after age of an adoptive child. "Most of our families just want a baby as young as possible, and the United States is the best place to go for a newborn," says Lorne Welwood of Hope Adoption Services in Abbotsford, British Columbia. "They are not ignoring race issues, but they don't think, like the Americans, that the less black the better." I'm not going to condemn Americans for not wanting to adopt black kids as much as white kids. Does this mean foreigners have better hearts? Well, in a way, yes. Just wait 1,000 years so that everyone will have had enough inter-racial sex so that most people will look like Philipinos. At least by then society can be done with race-relation issues.
it's not exactly cut and dried that this reflects any racism on the part of americans. many black parents don't want their kids adopted by white american parents. and what about gay adoptions? do socially conservative black parents want their children adopted by white gay couples?
I don't know the stats for sure, but I believe those stats aren't really relevant. Black parents don't want their children adopted by white Americans but have no problem with White Europeans adopting their children? There is a race problem in the U.S. People like to pretend like it doesn't exist because Jim Crow laws aren't the norm anymore, but it's definitely there. I've seen a black woman who was holds two PHD's asked to help getting some things ready for a banquet because it was assumed that she was help. Store security following blacks around more than whites based on appearance happens all the time. There are definitely problems and this might be a symptom.
Well.....not really. I wonder if these European parents will tell these kids their roots? I think they will. Will they retain dual citizenship? Will they be angree at America? I don't think so. This is an interesting topic nonetheless with lots of questions.
I love this part!...When I see interracial couples, I smile...because I know this is a headstart to less division, more acceptance, and less allure of a race heritage...It's fine to say: "I'm proud of my single race heritage", but I think it's better to be proud of a multiple race heritage...
