Ok, I've been trying and trying to get bittorent to work. I'm a computer idiot. Can someone help? I've downloaded bittorrent onto my computer. it says that "to use bittorrent, click on a website that uses it and click on a link" Well, I go to R2K's link for the rockets/jazz game and click on it. The bittorrent program comes up but nothign happens. it's like it's stuck on the download segment. Edit - it gives me an error and says that this torrent is already running. Help please?
i have a green arrow in the bittorrent program. when i hover over it, it says "running: drag to re-order, right click for menu" I'm also showing upload rate of 0kb/s, same thing for download rate.
BitTorrent 4.0.4 I'm at a computer at work. Dont know squat about firewalls/router. I can tell you that the company does have a blocker that keeps you from going to "Bad" websites, which is a good thing.
two things being technologically challenged, you might want to go ahead and download and use azureus...it is by far the simplest client for the noob. when you install it and open the torrent file in it, give it a few minutes to attempt to make cotact with the tracker and peers and then see what color the circle is (yellow,blue,green,red)...this will tell you real quick if you are even contacting anyone in the swarm..(for a text explanation of the colors, hover you pointer over it for a moment) you need to find out if they block p2p protocals....do you know someone in IT/network admins?
Most likely your workplace is blocking torrent downloads. But first off, test it out with a "real" torrent program. The original torrent client by all accounts, sucks. Give www.utorrent.com a try. It's tiny, doesn't require installing (it's a straight executable), and doesn't need java runtime (like azureus). If utorrent doesn't work either, then I'd assume that your workplace has put the clamps down on BT.
am about to download azureus. it's asking me to select host location and a preferred mirror. what should I choose. I'm in Houston.
doesnt matter whichever one is closest is the normal procedure. mcable...I havent tried utorrent, but does it provide the quick glance tracker connection status like azureus does? That was why I recommended he try it for that feature alone...that will tell me if he is unable to get past the firewall or not.
utorrent not working either. i'm guessing i'm blocked. oh well. in the past, i've been able to get certain files to play as under Windows Media Player. But those were posted by others, not R2K and not as bittorent files.
Hmm. I can't recall offhand. It does have status icons, but I don't know if they are quite as simplistic as the color-coded smiley faces of Azureus. I suggested utorrent because it doesn't require installing (which is key at some workplaces), and doesn't require java runtime (which isn't necessarily installed on all work computers), and because I'm a recent convert to the cult of utorrent. I would suggest it to you too, but it doesn't have the ability to snub peers, which is very useful for initial seeders. Otherwise, it has the look, feel, and most of the features of Azureus while using a fraction of the resources.
Speaking of Bit Torrent, here's an insightful article on it's inventor: http://www.fortune.com/fortune/technology/articles/0,15114,1117681-1,00.html
One of the intitial problems I had with Azureus was due to my DSL router. I just let PnP take care of it - had to configure it to allow for Plug N' Play, but since I've done that Azureus does all the work. Now I'm downloading way too much. I actually had to buy a DVD burner just to free up space on my hard disk. It's an addiction. I suppose you wouldn't have access to the router at work though.
