http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=1818396 Sounds like a good interview set for Thursday at 7 PM on ESPN. Can't wait for all of the reactions from his comments, but I will hold off until I hear the entire show.
Dirk Nowitzki, Peja Stojakovich, Brad Miller, Steve Nash, Andrie Kirilenko, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Jason Williams, Rasho Nesterovic, Kirk Hinrich Hispanic- Manu Ginobili, Pau Gasol, Carlos Arroyo, Chinese- Yao Ming
Maybe he meant more white American players... I'd like to hear the full interview in context before making a judgement.
If this is everybody else that's not black, and good... then Bird was right. Of this group, you've got a 7'6 guy, 7'3 guy, four 7'0, a bunch of scraggly point guards, and only ONE guy who could come close to emulating Bird, and that's Stojakovich (who dissapears come playoff time). So, if you're not super tall, or a super speedy short-man, good luck stickin in this league...
Just joking. I don't see why rings matter. He said he wanted white stars, not more white rings. But if you insist: Steve Kerr, Stan Medvenko, Chris Jent, Mark Madsen
I don't think you can write off Nowitzki and Kirilenko as just "7 footers". They can do a lot of things your average 7 footer (whether black or white or Chinese) can't do. Like leading a fast break for one. Nash is no scraggly little point guard, and Hinrich looks very promising. Stockton and Bird werent exactly super tall or super speedy and they are 2 of the greatest players ever.
If you go to ESPN.com and click on the motion link it has the 2 videos where you can actually here the interview. then judge for yourself. he is not making it as bad as you think. http://sports.espn.go.com/broadband...deos=1817523|1817530&CMP=ILC-Motion_Home_Edit
Doesn't this apply to all colors? The NBA is a game of the super tall and the super athletic. The fact (and problem) is, very few white men are super athletic, compared to blacks. I think this has something to do with genetics. Nothing really racist.
they should be some affirmative action with pro sports like in business each team must have so many whites, blacks, hispanics, asians etc.
You can't be serious. I don't see the big deal about Bird's comment. I hate Jim Gray and I hate sports media. They make a big deal about every damn thing.
