1) Billy Ray Cyrus - Some Gave All 2) Kris Kross - Totally Krossed Out 3) Pearl Jam - Ten 4) Mariah Carey - MTV Unplugged 5) Soundtrack - Boomerang With the exception of Pearl Jam...MY GAWD, what were we thinking?!?!
"Achy Breaky Fart" was ten years ago already? I'm probably not remembering this joke correctly, but here goes: Two men are captured and are about to be executed by their enemies. The executioner says, "OK, we're granting you each one last request, so let me know what you want." One of the two condemned men says, "I would like to hear 'Achy Breaky Heart' once more before I die." Hiding his surprise, the executioner turns to the second prisoner. "All right, then, what's your request?" "Kill me first."
I guess by "we", I meant the general music buying public. Ten is the only one of those albums I bought (on TAPE noe less), but I've made my fair share of forgettable musical purchases, as have many other people...
When I was a kid (late 70's - early 80's), I would buy 45s from Wal-Mart. I remember purchasing the Dukes of Hazzard theme on vinyl. Look at them girls with them Daisy Dukes on... Some of my later less intelligent purchases include... Skinny Puppy Dead Kennedys Revolting Cocks Van Halen (w/Sammy Hagar...just not the same w/o Dave!)
Apparently the general public learned nothing in the next 5 years: Billboard Top 5 - August 9, 1997 1. No Way Out, Puff Daddy 2. Men In Black--The Album 3. Spice, Spice Girls 4. Middle Of Nowhere, Hanson 5. Surfacing, Sarah McLachlan
kriss kross was the second tape i ever bought, right after GnR - use your ilusion 1. back in the day there were some good songs on there. "warm it up kris"
Actually the Boomerang soundtrack isn't nearly as bad as you make it seem. If I remember correctly, I was in 7th grade at the time. It had "End of the Road" by Boyz II Men, and "I'd Die without you" by PM Dawn.
Dudes, what about the present-day Top 5? 1 Unleashed, Toby Keith 2 Now 10, Various Artists 3 Nellyville, Nelly 4 Busted Stuff, Dave Matthews Band 5 The Eminem Show, Eminem Some things never change... (no offense DMB fans).
Yeah, I was thinking about Eminem. Ten years from now people will be saying, Who? Eminem and a modern-day K-Tel records' 10th bestselling collection in the Top 5. Shame, shame.
I don't think we'll be saying "Who?" about Eminem in ten years...He's been a pretty influential music artist and is a superstar not only in America, but he's maybe an even bigger star in the rest of the world. He's huge over in the UK, the only rapper ever to have more than one #1 hit over there I think... I think he might follow in Dr. Dre's footsteps later in his career and be a real successful producer primarily instead of a rapper.
I'm listening to "Ten" right now. This is a CD that sounds as awesome and fresh as it did 10 years ago. I can't say the same thing for Kriss Kross . . .
and a really great collaboration by Babyface and Toni Braxton... "Give U My Heart" i have that soundtrack on tape... still a good one.
Sounds fresh now?! It didn't even sound fresh then! It's mainstream AOR straight outta the seventies. Don't get me wrong, I really like Pearl Jam, but innovative they ain't.
Hey ... that Spice Girls CD was pretty awesome 'if you wanna be my lover ... lalalalalaa' And Building A Mystery was a great song too ... the album sucked tho. And the Mariah Carey Unplugged was really good, this was back when she used that gorgeous voice. The Boomerang Sdtrk also had 'Love Shoulda Brought You Home' by Toni Braxton, the song that jumpstarted her career. --rockit
Well, perhaps innovative isn't the best way to put it. When I put the word "Fresh" I was wondering if I could come up with a better descriptor. What I really mean is that it distanced itself from other music at that time period. Not much NEW in terms of sound, but it was just very solid and awesome in a way that managed to find uniqueness despite its unoriginality.
