still a new member, I'm sure there is another thread like this floating around. If so please combine them for me. Good Book? Gonna start it tonight. Things to look forward to?
i thought it was good. i wish i could find a few more sports books to read between the book of basketball and a yao ming biography thats all ive ever read.
Oh, and the relentless Vince Carter bashing. Really, Simmons is hilarious and I'm a bit surprised only a handful of folks had opinions-- are you people not reading?
It's funny. Very entertaining read, though I can't help but think that Simmons is mainly interested in the great Celtics teams and their competitors, and to a lesser extent in Kobe and Jordan. For instance, there's a lot of stuff on the '80s Rockets, who came close to challenging the Celtics and Lakers for dominance in that decade, but almost nothing on the '90s championship Rockets teams. I'd recommend it as good light reading. I read it all out of order.
Im just finishing reading the book now and I enjoyed it a lot. Its really funny and entertaining, plus you get a full history of basketball that makes you feel pretty smart after. I wish he would update it now cause I think his opinions on some players have probably changed since it came out (like Lebron, Kobe, Ray Allen) but its definitely worth reading if you like basketball.
Mediocre at best. Simmons likes to pretend he's more knowledgable than he is, and that gets annoying about 100 pages in. There are some decent moments, but even though he claims he removed all biases it's a pretty Boston-centric book. THIS however is phenomenal. Get it. Get it now. The chapters on Nash & Battier were both amazing and worth the cost of the book by themselves.
Simmons is updating the pyramid for the paperback edition, including changes after these playoffs. I think he mentioned it in one of his ESPN articles during the playoffs.
