My brewing feud with Jazz fans. Because I keep dismissing the Chris Paul-Deron Williams "rivalry" and wrote last week that Paul was the Pearl Jam to Williams' Stone Temple Pilots, that earned me a steady stream of hate mail from Utah and an extended rip in something called the Deseret News. Look, people of Utah -- you ruined the 2002 Olympics because nobody could buy a stiff drink or a beer that had a real level of alcohol, and I think "Last Call" was 8:30 at night. As my friend Jacoby jokes, "Each brewery around the world has to brew and bottle special low-alcohol beer solely because Utah hates fun." It's true. The only reason we still put up with you is the skiing. I'd keep it down. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/081028
During the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, alcoholic beverages were served with an incredibly weak amount of alcohol actually in them because Utah is a dry state, and they were trying to limit the amount of people who were drunk on the streets. They didn't want to encourage the behavior at all, but they had to cater to the needs of the international and domestic guests that were staying there. I'm not sure if last call was actually at 8:30, but it wouldn't surprise me one bit if it was.
mark that up as one more thing on a very long and extensive list of reasons i will never ever NEVER move to utah.
Not true. I live in Utah and while the booze was overpriced during the Olympics it was flowing freely. Believe me.
He's 100% right. There was no 8:30 last call either. What Bill Simmons also fails to mention is that Utah isn't the only state to have a weaker alcohol content. Several other states have the same alcohol content as Utah, including Oklahoma, Colorado, and Kansas. I enjoy Bill Simmons bashing the Jazz and their fans, but he's off base when he stereotypes the state of Utah the way he does. Utah is a great place to live. I've lived in Texas, California, Arkansas, and Florida and there's just as much to do here in Utah than there is in any of those states...minus going to the beach of course.
