Really good news, I hope they are wise enough to welcome Russell.

Have any more info on this? An article? Some proof that this isn't a rumor?

Well, at least he's not buying himself for free, that would be terrible.

Bill Russell probably wants to keep Shaq out of the top spot :)

And I don't mind him coaching Yao, but Yao also needs a big man who is better than him to bang on all summer. We all know that helps.

Thats why the Rockets should have done something about Moses Malone, he is still an active athlete and could bang with and coach Yao Ming!

I don't know what happened with that. Both sides said they wanted it to happen and it hasn't. I am surprised Hakeem hasn't really tried to help Yao. I really wish Yao could stay here and to to Wetside to get even more of an education.

Maybe the Rockets' coaching staff think they can do the job themselves?! Wasn't it CD who worked with Hakeem way back when?

Windandsea, thanks for the info! Please keep us up to date on this. I think having Russell coming to coach Yao (for free or whatever) is a great move. Having a legitimate NBA post player teach Yao about the NBA and basketball would do wonders for his game and would help out the Chinese National team quite a bit not to mention Yao's growth with the Rockets. The Chinese National team would be VERY SMART in bringing him in to help coach Yao!

I really think someone like Kareem would be more helpful to Ming than Russell. Honestly, Russell offense sucked big time, but he was a winner. Kareem could really, really help Ming alot.

IMO Russell is ideal, although i never saw him play, he has 11 rings, and he was a physical player (so i've been told). Yao has offensive moves, he is a inreliable on defense and he need to get tougher. and that was russels speciality

IMO Sabonis is the perfect guy to mentor Yao. I would love for Sabonis to come here his last few years as our 3rd center, Glen Rice seems like a fair trade. Their playing styles are the most similar out of all the great centers. I'll take Bill Russell though he can help work on the basics and toughness. This is great news
