Personally I don't think it likely that Russell will go to China and coach Yao Ming. On the other hand, Yao is not due to report to the National Team until May 20th. So the jury is still out.

The Chinese official has not given him an answer yet due to SARS situation in China.
I hope they will get him.

I don't think Bill Russell will coach Yao. It makes no since, why would he fly all the way to China to coach Yao?

I do not know his reason but he did apply for the position to coach Yao. He will do it for free too.
He may like Yao and want to teach him.
