mlbtraderumors is reporting that the Biggio deal is done ($4 mil + incentives) and that Huff is close the re-signing for 3-4 years

$4 million + .....YIKES  Same as last year when he certainly didn't earn it.

Don't get me wrong....I'd pay him twice that if the other option was going to another team (only because I don't see the Stros in the World Series next year with or without that), but it would have been nice if he agreed to play for say, half.

sounds just fine to me.. same as last yr, cause i doubt he'll reach whatever incentives they are (unless they are 3k hits, haha)

I don't buy it. Why would we be resigning huff? He was terrible with us and I would think the Astros plan on adding a big bat OF which would make Huff's PT close to nill.

    No confidence in Ensberg?

Biggio will make the organization that and more as he goes for 3000.

Buy it! If Ensberg does not show something very early in Spring Traning he will be gone. Huff did alright for the Astros in his short time here. He is a better option at 3rd than Ensberg at this point.

    Terrible?

Sure the .250 wasn't so nice, but he had 13 HR and 38 RBI in 68 games. Extrapolate that to 162 games, and you're talking 31 HR and 91 RBIs.

When the guy's a career .285 hitter, and his 162 game averages are 26 HRs and and 91 RBIs (playing for a pitiful Tampa Bay offense), I don't think there's much doubt as to what you are getting.

it's not just no confidence in ensberg. it's just that huff has been far more consistent over the course of his career than ensberg.

i like the move, frankly. it was what i hoped they would do at 3B.

    considering:

    (1) our ballpark; and
    (2) throwing a quality lefty against us renders our two best hitters (berkman & scott) impotent

we should be looking at getting some righthanded pop in the lineup.

signing bigg is understandable. he is, deservedly, a lifer. signing huff? i'm fine with it, as long as it does not prevent us from bringing in the needed right handed pop.

Berkman is hardly impotent when he's switched now.

MLBtraderumore is the WORST website ever. They make up all their info. Not reliable whatsoever. Of course Biggio will resign. We'll see about Huff. Please don't ever start with MLBtraderumors reports.......wait for ESPN, SI or MLB.com to report it first, ok?

I asked this in the Offseason Thread, and I'll bring it up again here:

Did anyone actually HEAR 610 mention that the Astros & Huff were "close" to signing? I caught 4 or 5 sportsflashes on the hour/half yesterday afternoon & they did not mention it once. Not a word. It has not been reported on astros.com or in the chron.

It is made up. Flat out made up by whatever "reader" sent in the Biggio news to mlbtraderumors.

I've said this before as well, and will repeat here: if there is an unsourced item on that site - an item not directly linked from another site - this item is almost guaranteed to be fabricated. He & his "sources" have been wrong about every single scoop they've posted, save one (Mirabelli back to the Sox last season, which was not exactly a surprise to anyone who followed news out of RedSoxLand). Every. Single. One.

Anyone who uses that site as reference should be beaten with a garden hose.

I just read Allyson Footer's last mailbag report indicating she doubted that the 'stros would pursue Huff, because they think he really wants to test the market for a big deal.

Yeah, there were a whole lot of qualifiers in there, though:

*I'm not convinced* Huff is returning. The Astros are *expecting* him to test the free-agent market, and considering he's not going to make less than the $6.75 million he pulled in last year, and he's *probably* looking for a multi-year deal, he *may be* expendable.

Certainly more concrete than a 3rd-hand story sourced to a radio report that was never broadcast, though.

Great deal, I hope Biggio retires an Astro. I'd hate to see him end up like Bagwell and finish somewhere else.
