Anyone else excited about the new HBO series premiering Sunday after The Sopranos? For those who don't know, it stars Bill Paxton (yes, I'm excited in spite of that) as a polygamist with three wives-Jeanne Tripplehorn, Chloe Sevigny and Ginnifer Goodwin (yum). Previews look great.
Ginnigfer Goodwin's character in Walk the Line has made me severely dislike her. But the show does look interesting.
Looks like an instant HBO hit and the best show they've put out since the Sopranos. I will definitely tune in.
Did anyone watch it? I'm seriously having a hard time getting past the premise, but I think it's got good potential. Harry Dean Stanton's character could be fun.
I watched the Making of before The Sopranos, but didn't watch the show. I was a little let down by the making of, but maybe the actual show will be better.
couldn't help it, I tuned in. the mormons are gonna be all over this. basically the guy comes from a cult life style, one of his wives tries to distant herself from it, tripplehorn, the second is into it. I forgot who plays her. the way hbo sold it as some big funny show about a guy with three wives is very different from what it is. its a utah mafia style drama, the main character has his business financed by his church (from what I gather) and they seem to want some control.
Yeah, the postscript at the end of the show saying that Mormons officially banned the practice of polygamy in 1890 may not be enough. Who knows, though?
I watched it. What a trip! Yeah I was thinking there are probably going to be some angry people over this show. It seems like it will be good though.
anything that HBO puts out seems to be one step ahead of every other network, so I am sure this will be no different. thank god for HBO ON DEMAND.
With the reviews this show is getting, I don't see it being canceled. This isn't Fox we're dealing with here.
I watched it. I don't think it is negative to the Morman mainstream. The friction comes from cultish fringe that makes the news every now and then. There is something captivating about watching a guy with three times the sexual opportunities, but also three times the problems a husband/father has. Harry Dean Stanton plays "the Prophet" who leads a clan that mostly lives in a compound somewhere in the sticks. Bill Paxton plays a guy who had broken away and is trying to be a mainstream business-man in S.L.C., but keeps the polygamist beliefs of his clan. There is the usual HBO sex, which no church would condone, but I don't think it paints the mainstream LDS in a bad light. There was one really funny part where Paxton, who has been dodging his husbandly duties, due to lack of performance, buys some viagra. After taking one, he gets into bed with one wife he had put off earlier and starts to get romantic, but says something to piss her off. She rolls over and says " I need to get a good night's sleep", and he gets this weird look on his face as he stares at the tent he's just pitched. Pretty funny. This show looks to have potential. I hope the LDS church isn't overly offended by it. (Say no more offended by it than by all the vile and disgusting things that go on in Deadwood.) I don't think the main church identifies with the fringe polygamist clans. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
but the thought from the mormons, which I completely understand, is gonna be can mainstream america who knows nothing about their lifestyle separate this show from the mainstream religion. I think hbo conciously takes you out to the compound on the show to make sure you recognize this but will it be enough for the mormons not to be offended.
That scene was a riot, partly because anyone who's been in a long-term relationship has to have experienced something similar at least once. I think the show will be a hit. I'm certainly going to watch it. It'll be one of those series with laughs, drama, sex, and romance. Lots of paths were laid that the series can take. HBO rocks!
