Hold up. You think a new border law would fix the illegal immigration problem? Are you aware that the Democrats have been brazenly ignoring immigration/border rules for decades? They have actively worked to prevent enforcement of border security for many years, as they believe it helps their future political prospects. But this new law -- yes, that's the one that they'll enforce! RIGHT. How naive.

Laken Riley's death was preventable and is on the Democrats' hands.

Being at her school would have prevented it. Going to the gym would have prevented it. Having a treadmill would have prevented it.

How will they feel if they discover he came here during Trump's Presidency? We have zero idea if it could have reasonably been prevented by ICE or Border Patrol. We don't know how he got here, how long he's been here, or if they have ever been made aware of him being in this country.

Yes, it's a pointless line of reasoning that only serves to fuel hatred. It's not productive in any way.

Whereas we perceive political issues as culture wars, they intuitively know it's a demographic shift. In 2008, Obama won only 43 percent of the white vote but fully 80 percent of the minority vote—enough to give him his 53 to 47 percent victory.

What did the GOP do with this demographic shift...Court more Black and Latino voters? Nah, they went even further with the Southern Strategy by tapping more populist outrage and rally their shrinking and aging base. They whisper White Genocide as a nod to their dwindling numbers and strike fears of immigrants and transgenders (an unholy alliance) overrunning their land and values.

Trump merged elements of Palinism, strong man authoritarianism (the bully to stand up against the Lib rainbow coalition), and reality tv hyper surrealism to win over a new group of voters, but the authoritarian undercurrent within the GOP was always there. Evangelicals will support authoritarianism because their pastor tells them to. Roberts, Thomas, and Alito didn't suddenly become pro-Trump with authoritarian enabling decisions because they were afraid of getting voted out. Hannity, Rush, and Laura Ingram did not change their tune much with the Trump era. More like Trump tunes into Fox News on the daily to understand what "his base" is feeling.

It's not that they all assume authoritarianism under Trump will work, rather they want to destroy the current contract and hope to get a better deal from the strongman who does it...Cold boxes for illegal immigrant children, more Iowa handouts, less covid support if it's an urban issue, more opioid support because it's a rural issue. These are all measures to prove he is on "their side" and without equivocation, and the Trump admin followed through on many of his campaign promises that made him popular enough to override the GOP primary establishment.

So if Trump is the symptom and not the root, what should we be focused upon and addressed to contain populism in hopes of pushing the GOP back into legitimacy (by 90s standards)?
    • The K-shaped economy where the ultrarich are rewarded through rents (physical and digital) or inflated asset classes and the losers are punished as lazy and debt ridden credit risks.
    • The blight in flyover country where the opioid epidemic symbolizes hopelessness and where areas still have 5 digit houses for sale.
    • Progressive populism in coastal regions where they emphasize zero-sum policies through "equity" in order to atone for a past that never truly enriched many of the "Deplorable" Trumpers.
    • Bipartisan consensus on the immigration issue that's beginning to fracture intra-state cooperation beyond repair.

I mean if any of those points were easy, a politician would've had the guts to talk about it and at least try to fix it.

Absolutely not. This sort of naked politicization of people being murdered should not be normalized or “relaxed”.

What about all the people who were killed by illegal immigrants when Trump was President? I didn't hear you screaming about Trump then.

I think electing him is definitely a symptom. I believe he's the cause of the party moving toward authoritarianism. The tendency was there for sure (it's also present on the extreme left), but it needs a leader to make it generally acceptable and thus mainstream within the party. Without that leader, I believe it would remain on the extreme but wouldn't gain enough support to be mainstream.

I have no ideas on how to pull the GOP back. I follow a few former GOP and never-Trumpers, and they believe there is no going back. They think that the GOP party, as it exists today, must die out for a new party to replace it.

Not true. If a third party candidate cracks a certain percentage of the vote, then in the next election that party will be eligible to receive millions of dollars in funds from the FEC for their campaign. I think the threshold is 5% of the popular vote. That is really a first step to breaking the duopoly.

Don't think that's true. Gary Johnson, Jill Stein, and many others 3rd party candidates have used FEC public funding for presidential primaries and elections. I don't see any requirement for the 5% of popular vote. Other requirements are outlined in the link below.

He ran on an open border. The outcome shouldn't surprise anyone.

Biden Says Only Felons Should Be Deported And He Doesn’t ‘Count Drunk Driving as a Felony’

Biden’s comments came after he was asked “what exact changes would you bring to ICE as an agency,” and he responded by saying he would fire an agent who tried to deport an undocumented immigrant not charged with a felony

    https://www.nationalreview.com/news...nd-he-doesnt-count-drunk-driving-as-a-felony/

    https://cis.org/Arthur/Biden-No-Deportations-100-Days-and-Only-Felonies-Thereafter

      • This raises three questions: (1) How does he define "felony"? (2) Will he simply ignore the immigration law as it relates to any number of other dangerous criminals who are currently removable? And (3) Why exactly does he want aliens with foreign convictions for heinous offenses like murder, rape, sexual abuse of a minor, and drug trafficking to be able to enter and remain in the United States?

The best way to address the two party system is not through the presidency but through the states where you need lower numbers and can make more of an influence. In relatively recent years we’ve had third party and
Independent governors and even senators. In Minneapolis we have Independent and Green Party city council members.

The problem with trying to start at the national level is that because the Presidency is really 51 separate races (50 states plus DC) to be able to win it takes it just large personal popularity, a lot of money, but also enough state campaigns to carry enough states to 270 electoral votes.

Honestly, how ignorant would you have to be to think that Russian election interference has a meaningful impact on US elections? Meanwhile, the Democrats are running 7 political interference court cases against Trump, trying to take all his money, and trying to imprison him for life. This is all on top of rewriting the election laws, loosening voter integrity protections, letting illegals vote, and a non-stop 90% negative media that is attacking Trump daily. But look out for that $200 ad spend in Pennsylvania by the Russians -- that's going to swing the race!

Deckard, do you ever stop and question the government propaganda that you consume from outlets like NBC News? Would you describe a Russia who only quotes Pravda as being smart and informed? That's analogous to consuming mainstream media news and regurgitating it here. It's time for your intellectual awakening.
