In my mind, we have had two legendary villain performances in the past two years. Javier Bardem as Chigurh in No Country for Old Men was the best performance as a villain I had seen in years (probably since Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs). Now Heath Ledger turns in another legendary performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight.

Somewhat comparable performances, both incredible. Which was the best of a generation?

Out of those two, I can't pick. They both scared the crap out of me.

I did pick Bardem though...Heath was scary but also fascinatingly hilarious.

Not on the same level as those two, but worth mentioning:

Bill Nighy as Davy Jones (Pirates)
Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort (Harry Potter)
and Tim Roth as Blonksy (Incredible Hulk)

    All notable performances.

I didn't see the other two, but this one is a joke right? I mean he played the part fine and all, but it's "worth mentioning" in a conversation about legendary villain portrayals?

And I haven't seen The Dark Knight yet, but hopefully The Joker will be up there as well.

He was cool. Very niiiiiiiiiiice. I got chills watching his performance. It frosts me that he didn't get more accolades. It'll be a cold day in hell before any other villain measures up to him.

Ok, I'm out of "freeze" puns. Amazing that he was able to keep it going for the whole 2 hours. :D

I was just thinking the two you mentioned are the best villains since Hannibal.

I couldn't choose between them, 2 incredible performances.

Ok first of all the title of the thread is "best villain recently." I looked back on all the movies released over the last year and a half. The three I mentioned plus Bardem and Ledger would probably be the top 5 villains over that time period. I never said any of those performances were legendary, I merely said they are worth noting as memorable. Second of all, I said that Nighy, Fienes and Roth's performances were not on the same level as Bardem (won an Oscar) and Ledger (Oscar worthy).

If you had to rank them it'd probably be Bardem and Ledger, then Nighy and Fiennes then Roth. Just between Bardem and Ledger, I couldn't comment because I've seen neither yet.

Not that I have anything against them...they are pretty palatable if I HAVE to listen to a morning show (would probably prefer the Buzz). But Ryan sometimes doesn't know what the hell he's talking about...I still remember the first week they came on the air back when they were with the Mix...they were talking about Yao and how Bill Worrell sometimes refers to him as the "Great Wall" or his baseline move as the "Shanghai Shake." Ryan thought it was racist. Wth, never mind the fact that Yao played for the SHANGHAI Sharks and is one of the tallest players to ever grace an NBA court.

both are great, I really cant choose

Without Bartem, No Country for old Men would have been a horrible movie, his great performance made it into an average movie
