I would rank several above any of those listed: croissant, ciabatta, focaccia, garlic bread, squaw bread, naan, buscuits.
Bread freezes really well, so if you make or buy a good loaf (loaf is a funny word), wrap some in clingwrap and put it in a ziploc, it'll be pretty much bakery fresh when you thaw it out. As far as best kinds, there's no right answer, just depends on what you're eating. Rye deserves a mention for corned beef/pastrami/rueben sammiches. HEB bakery makes a really good sourdough that's great for toast & sandwiches. Whole Foods rustic italian is a great all-around bread. Whipped up some irish soda bread recently that was outstanding and simple to make.
