What is your opinion of the best 5, by position in the league?

Hypothetically, which 5 would you want if you had to win 1 game today.

    PG- Payton
    SG- Kobe
    SF- T-Mac
    PF- Duncan
    C- Shaq

I hate you kidrock but this is a good thread topic. ;)

    PG Kidd
    SG Kobe
    SF Pierce
    PF Duncan
    C Shaq

If I had to play a game for my soul, this would be my squad.

    PG - Kidd
    SG - McGrady
    SF - Garnett
    PF - Duncan
    C - Shaq

Essentially, the West's best in the frontcourt and the East's best in the backcourt.

    1 - Payton
    2 - Kobe
    3 - Garnett
    4 - Duncan
    5 - Shaq
Each one of these guys has a complete game, both offensively and defensively. They're all gamers too. Triple Towers down low doesn't hurt.

    C: Shaquille O'neal
    PF: Antoine Walker
    SF: Dirk Nowitski
    SG: Reggie Miller
    PG: Steve Nash

You put Shaq down in the paint, with 4 excellent 3-point shooters camping outside, this team is unbeatable.

If I was making an actual team, as opposed to the best, I would have:

    Kidd- best pg
    Bryant-best sg
    Garnett-toughest matchup at sf
Ben Wallace-need somebody who doesn't want to score
    Shaq-best Shaq

I might take out garnett and just put in a pure shooter though or a quick, scottie pippen in his heydey guy, although there don't seem to be many worthy candidates these days. Garnett might not be happy just playing D, cause the middle would be reserved for Shaq with Wallace crashing the boards.

Here's a twist - a starting 5 composed of players who fit under the salary cap with $5m to spare for a decent bench.

In essence, for $35 million, what is the best starting 5 you can come up with? I think it's more representative of an actual starting 5, since most teams are around this figure with their starting 5 anyway.

Personally, I'd go with Jason Kidd, Cuttino Mobley, Peja Stojakovic, Tim Duncan, and Ben Wallace. There's enough scoring, shooting, rebounding, and defense to go around to make for a fearsome starting 5.

It'd probably fare pretty well against mine and the other starting 5's already posted in this thread as well.

The Five best starters in the league are kidd, kobe, garnet, duncan, shaq. But honestly almost any team composed of shaq and kobe would win a championship. Not to be bias because i'm not a fan of the lakers but u can't stop both kobe and shaq. Its a question of choosing your poison. and both can kill u.

F Richard Jefferson - for defense.
G Ray Allen - for shooting.
G Baron Davis - for everything.

Uh, 3814, your $35m team makes well over $35m - Pierce and Nowitzki will make over $10m next year, as will Duncan and Kobe. Bibby's is still undecided, but even if he plays for free, it's still over $35m. But it's one heck of a team, for sure.

I still don't know if Kidd really is better than Payton.

Kidd's a great player, don't get me wrong, but he can't create shots for himself like Payton can. Plus, Payton is the greatest defensive PG of all-time.

oh, thought we were goin with last years salaries...sorry. i'm too lazy to do another, but the thing is...if you build a team around $35 million, you got to pick up a couple star players before they are stars at low salaries...and then once they're good, you'll lose them.

    C - Shaq
    PF - Ben Wallace
    SF - Peja
    SG - Ray Allen
    PG - Glove

With Shaq down low, Ben Wallace crashing the boards, Peja and Ray camping at the 3, and Gloves skills at point, I think this team would be nearly unbeatable. You can tell I'm a Rockets fan can't you? Dump it down low and give me a couple three point shooters....
