I need someone to settle and argument for me. Does anyone know what the best selling rock album of all time is? I have done numerous searched on the internet and came up with nothing. My best quess is Pink Floyd - Dark side of the moon..
I "think" that was on the charts the longest. For sheer volume of sales, I think it was one of the Eagles Greatest Hits albums.
The best selling album of all time (regardless of genre) is the first Eagles Greatest Hits album. http://www.riaa.org/inside_RIAA_JH.cfm
Are we talking in the US alone or worldwide? As far as where it ranks worldwide, but I do know that AC/DC's "Back In Black" has sold 41 million copies worldwide.
Great call Pole. I didnt even think about RIAA's site. I think you are also correct on DSOTM w/ most weeks on the charts.
Thanks...but SCF got me on the technicality. I have no idea who would win on worldwide sales. I wonder if it would be some Chinese artist?
Where can I find worldwide sales information? Determining U.S. sales is difficult enough. Determining foreign sales is almost impossible, especially in Eastern Europe and the Pacific Rim, not to mention the vast amount of bootlegging in many countries. At least we now have Soundscan as a double check on record label's claims concerning U.S. sales. If I ever find a reliable source for worldwide sales, I'll make a web page for that. Guinness Book of World Records lists some worldwide toppers. For starters you can check out this Yahoo! news article on the best selling singles in the world. Entertainment Weekly reported in its May 1, 1998 issue that Candle in the Wind has sold 34 million copies worldwide and White Christmas has sold 30 million. I was planning to compile the random reports I see on worldwide sales, but there's just no reliable consistent source. http://www.neosoul.com/riaa/faq.html Yahoo News Article: http://www.neosoul.com/riaa/19971002news.html
