At a store or online? What about a refurbished one from Macintosh's website? It's about time to pull the trigger....I want me a minimum 8GB.
usually i'd recommend iaudio's players to those looking for a cheaper mp3 player with a few more functions built in, but i see ipod's getting cheaper and smaller with their latest generation. i bought my mp3 player online, and its working as good as i first bought it a year ago. i'd go with store if you can find exactly the model you want
Get the video Ipod. It's 30gb for the smallest and it is totally worth the extra $. I didn't think I cared about the video, I just wanted the bigger storage but the video rocks.
Considering the new 8GB Nano is retailing for $249... and the new 30GB iPod is also retailing for $249, the only reason to go for the Nano is the size. I'd prefer the 30GB (or even the new 80GB for a little more $). I've heard good things about the refurbished ones. You can usually find cheaper, older generation ones on Amazon (40GB for $150 is pretty common). If you really want the Apple certified ones through the Apple store though, you usually see the older 30GB ones going for about $180.
Go to the Apple store itself. I don't trust the ones at regular retail stores - I know a lot of those were outsourced to HP, which I don't trust in the slightest. If you're looking for something strictly for music/commuting/working out, the nano 8 GB is probably a good call. As a word of caution, however, I use mine purely for music and I've got about 23 GB taken up (right at 3700 songs @ 196 kbps bit rate on average <~6 MB/song>). The video iPods are pretty sweet, but you really need to take care of them - it's popular opinion that they scratch and scuff much more than older versions, and screen imperfections can really ruin them. Also since they're wider, they're not the best for working out with. As a final note, it's expected that widescreen ipods (going from 2.5" diagonal screens to 4" diag) will be released in 6 weeks to 3 months time. Yes, new video iPods JUST came out, but they weren't next generation, more like build 2 of the current gen, and regarded to be a delay tactic since the widescreen iPods had been such a challenge to engineer (particularly the battery drain associated with increasing the screen size). I still have a mint condition black 30gb video I'll sell you... Or I have a 60 gb white new in box I'll sell (it is engraved with our company name) Let me know if you are interested in either one.
I still have a 2nd generation iPod Mini.. that sucker has taken a licken and kept on tickin, which is the most important thing to me. The new ipods keep getting smaller and i'm just so damned afraid that one false move by me while im working out and bam, no more iPod for me. And the video ipods although totally awesome if you're often in need of portable entertainment, are kinda clunky and also delicate as well. If you're like me and only want your ipod for working out + listening to while you travel then try and find an old Mini that never got bought.. they're sturdy and the right size.
I am definitely using it for music only...for wearing while I work out and for plugging into my car stereo. I'm thinking 8GB in size....1,000 songs is too small, 2,000 would work just fine. Might have to check out a refurb mini (thanks Donny Most)
I am about to get a nano. I had the video version, but it got wet by accident and it is gonzo - after only a month!!! Honestly, it was a little bigger than what I needed anyway. I really only use it when I'm working out. The shuffle is great for just a run in the park, but going to the gym or anything like that, I need something with more space.
do they even sell minis anymore? they've got the nanos on their site but those seem way to fragile to be working out with. i LOVE the shuffle b/c it's lightweight and and you can do all kinds of things to them before they go kaput. unfortunately, 1 gig is not enough.
I think the new nanos have the aluminum casing that they put on minis so they should be more sturdy than before.
I love my iPod but I'm afraid it might be useless because something is wrong with iTunes on my computer. It won't open. I downloaded the new version but I'm still getting an error message with I try to open it. Any suggestions? [Thread Hijack] Jeff, did you know that Ben Folds is playing with the Houston Symphony a week from tonight at Jones Hall? [/Thread Hijack]
I just got the 8 GB Nano for my B-day. I love that thing. I really wouldn't use a video option and the regular video ipods are too big for me. I got a little rubberized case with a clip for it to keep it from getting messed up and it works just fine when working out. We got it from the Apple store in the Woodlands.
I'd get the 8 GB that's come out, like Supermac got. Amazing how they fill up. You can put a bunch of photos in them to show to friends and relatives on the spur of the moment, a cool feature. I love my 60 GB video, but borrow my wife's nano to work out and stuff like that.
I just ponied up the $249 to get a brand new one. The 8 GB is pretty darn new, so about the only way to get it for less is to go with a refurb. I figured I would rather have a brand new one. The new generation is also a little slimmer than the original nano, so a lot of the older nano accessories don't fit it exactly right. The Apple store had stuff that fit it correctly (my case). I have to admit, once I was in the store and they have all the 30GB video iPods for the same price, I was tempted. But then I figured that the smaller one was better for my needs.
Honestly, I just don't see myself ever using it for anything but music. I don't use it much anyway - really just for working out. I never carried around a Walkman as a kid, so I can't imagine suddenly getting hooked on having earbuds in 24/7. Plus, my laptop goes with me almost everywhere if I want to show photos.
