I personally bought my desktop on Ebay. It's super fast and I got a screaming deal on it. But I know what I'm doing. I can build a computer from barebones.

What's the best place to get a computer for people that can't build their own. Dell? I really don't know, I would never do it myself, but I have faraway friends that keep asking me.

    Thanks in advance.

    :)

    I bought mine from UBID.com .

Their prices are pretty damn good, you can get some reall kick a** deals from the auction. BUT, their shipping and handeling fees suck!

I would go back there again to buy some more stuff though. I have botten a lot of electronics from them. (Digital Camera, Smatmedia cards, PS2 controler, Laptop, etc)

Dell has a great deal right now straight from them.

I think its $599 for a P4 2.8GHz with monitor etc, and free upgrade to 15inch flatscreen.

Check out http://www.fatwallet.com http://www.pricewatch.com for info on prices etc.

If you can wait, Dell is among the best places if you can get coupons. People usually get out of there with pretty well-configured Pentium 2.4 GHz (and higher) boxes for under $600. With pricing errors that Dell apparently has all the time, you may be able to get them for $300-$400. :D

I could probably build a PC with a bit of help from a friend or two, and almost went that route prior to my last PC purchase. That said, I am a Dell guy.

Until Dell gives me a reason to switch, I'm going to continue to purchase their products. The fact that they are a Texas company doesnt hurt either.

I'm on my 4rd Dell, and have not had a single issue. Their PC's are bulletproof.

Dell usually has good deals on them every month to 2 months. I've gotten $1300 21" LCD's for $700 from them in the past due to pricing errors combined with coupons.

There was a pretty sweet deal on 19" LCDs there a week or two ago. Follow forums like the hot deals forums on www.fatwallet.com/forums and http://forums.anandtech.com.

Their configurators are rip-offs if you try upgrading or downgrading their default configurations. That's about the only thing I hate about Dell. I build my own PC's but if I had to buy one, it would more than likely be a Dell - even though they don't use parts any different from anyone else.

    4rd? ;)

Anyways, DOD, How do the pricing errors work? I mean, do they give it to you knowingly (the purchase) because you found the error. Or are they never aware of it?

Pricing "errors" come in a variety of ways. For example you may be able to find a 10% off and a 20% off coupon at the same time and stack them when you shouldn't be allowed to. Sometimes they'll have a 20% off sale and you're allowed to use a 20% off coupon you have but you shouldn't be allowed to.

In my case, they had a pricing error for a $1300 21" LCD and priced it at something like $800+. I used another 10% or 15% off coupon to bring it down further. On top of that they were having free shipping at the time.

If you monitor Fatwallet and Anandtech, you can get in on some good deals. Sometimes Dell will cancel your purchase, but they often allow the purchase. People were running away with $20 200 GB hard drives a few weeks ago. There have been errors that allowed people to purchase Pentium 2.x GHz boxes for under $200. If you need it now and can't wait, this may not be a great solution, though.

    Thanks guys.

I think what I'll end up doing is building the computer myself and shipping it.

I'm beginning to think Dell might have the best deals though for people who decide to go that route.

I'm just confident I can get the same or better computer they're offering for no more than 2/3rds the cost, maybe less.

    But thanks again!

    :)

I agree. I know Dell's are overpriced, but like I said - I have yet to have a single issue with their products. Until then, I am all Dell.

Anyone here have experience with HP computers? They have a couple of 'media' systems that I've been eyeing, but I don't know anyone with an HP... is that a sign?

maybe it's time for me to 'build my own'??
