Forget the academy awards, you tell me what your favorite movie of last year was and why. I enjoyed some of the blockbusters that I'm sure will be listed, but my favorite movie of last year was "Memento". It is a hard movie to describe but I'll do my best. "Memento" is a story told backwards. We begin at the end of the movie and every few minutes or so it switches to the scene preceding the last scene. It does this to mimic the lead character's loss of long term memory. The lead character is on a mission to revenge the death of his wife. Since he has no long term memory, he takes polaroids of everything and tatoos important notes on his body. I found this movie to be one of the most mentally engaging movies I've ever seen. Who's next?
http://bbs.clutchcity.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27911&highlight=memento That thread includes a link to my list of the top 116 movies of last year. I didn't think too highly of Memento, but I'm in the vast minority both in the real world and on this BBS.
Rocketman95's favorite from the other thread is: 1. Vanilla Sky-What in the hell was that? That’s what I was thinking about half way through this mind-screwing movie. With an ending from about 100 miles past left field, I figured out that it was my favorite movie of the year.
Pulp Fiction... Yeah, it was released in 1994, but I <b>did</b> see it during the year...Still the best movie ever made... "...and I will strike down upon thee with great vengance and <i>furious</i> anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers...and you will know my name is THE LORD when I lay my vengance upon thee..."
I didn't see a good movie during the span of 2001. Sorry...but I have heard rave reviews for "Monster's Ball. I definitely want to see that movie.
My top 10. 1.Brotherhood of the Wolf (would of seen it in 2001 if my advanced passes didn't fall through) 2.Fellowship of the Ring 3.Memento 4.The Royal Tenenbaums 5.Vanilla Sky 6.Ghost World 7.Life as a House 8.Amelie 9.Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back 10.The Anniversary Party
Muholland Drive. Think Vanilla Sky but with a tour de force ending not a sucky explaination ending like Vanilla.
DEAN, I'm going to put that for 2002, since I saw it after my list. However, had it been for 2001, it probably would've been #1 or 2.
i dont know if i would have liked it if tom cruise wasnt in it. dude, i dont even like tom cruise. i think it was kinda weak.
My favorite movie that was released last year was Moulin Rouge. I didn't see it till a week or two ago b/c I had heard it was pretty medicore but I really enjoyed it. To me, it was one of those movies that is greater than the sum of its parts. The characters are fairly flat, the story is silly, it's a bit predictable, but there is just an incredible sense of fun in there that, if you're willing to accept some surrealness, can make an evening for you. I was still humming some of the songs a week later and bought it on DVD as soon as I had a chance. I can definitely see why some people would not like it but if you approach it with an open mind you could be in for a real treat. Plus Ewan McGregor is hot.
It wasn't the deepest of films, but Kevin Smith made this for the fans. Laced with inside jokes and cameos, quite a treat for a follower of the Jersey Saga.
Lord of the Rings; The Fellowship of the Ring, and it is already amongst my all-time favorite film experiences...blew me away.
I have to vote for LOTR. I hope the movie execs take notice that when they spend a lot of money on a QUALITY film, it will be well worth it.
1) Amelie - delightful, beautiful, funny, and just wonderful a close second for me is 2) Memento - original mystery, puzzling, confusing, and yet so interesting A big drop off from number 2 and the rest for me. 3) Snatch 4) A Beautiful Mind 5) Lord of the Rings 6) Royal Tenenbaums 7) Training Day 8) Shrek 9) The Score 10) Black Hawk Down This list is subject to change at any second. Movies I regret not seeing yet... Gosford Park, The Shipping News, The Man Who Wasn't There, Blow, and Sexy Beast.
did anyone see the movie "Bully"? it was the most disturbing, violent and sexfilled movie ive ever seen. i wouldnt say it was particularly really good, but its fascinating, sort of.
The guy who wrote the book that "Bully" was based on also writes for the Dallas Observer (equivalent of the Houston Press) and I don't think he was real happy with the way the film turned out.
Ok the only place I have ever even seen Memento Mentioned on this BBS, no one has came up to me saying it was a good movie, I never even heard of it until I seen some BBSers raving about it.So whats the plot and is it really that good? I havent seen LOTR but I still would pick it Brotherhood of the Wolves and The Count of Monte Cristo look really good as well.
Memento is about a guy that has lost his ability to store new memories into his long term memory. After about 5 minutes he forgets what he's doing. He uses tatoos and polaroids for his memory to help him find John G, the mystery man behind his memory lapse. The story goes in reverse so you are in the same situation as the main character, not knowing what happened before. LOTR and BOTW were great, but Count of Monte Cristo didn't do a good job establishing Edmund's eternal burning quest for revenge. I expect movies to deviate from the book, but this was watered down and heartwarming.
