Houston is known for its Mexican restaurants, but what is your favorite? In my opinion Lupe Tortilla is the best.
Terlingua's and Chuy's are my favorites for different reasons, both are not the cheapest around though, especially Terlingua's.
I like Hugo's and Otilia's. Just tried Tampico Seafood in the Heights, might need to add it to the list.
Las Rosas in Pearland http://www.lasrosasgrills.com/index.asp The Food Town store nearby has Buy 1 Get 1 Free coupon on the back of their receipts good through the end of July.
I don't know about new hole in the wall places that have opened the past 6 years, but when I come back to Houston I go to Lupe Tortilla the first night every time. Their steak fajitas and tortillas are amazing. Chuy's is an old favorite, and Cafe Adobe is a fun place for a big group of friends. Still, I'd vote Lupe Tortilla as the best Tex Mex. I don't understand the love for Papasito's. They're all right but way overpriced.
I judge my Tex-Mex restaurants on what I always order, and it happens to be the easiest item on the menu; cheese enchiladas. With that said, I've been to 2 places in Houston that make great cheese enchiladas; cafe adobe and cyclone anayas. The problem I keep running into at cyclone anayas is that their crab enchiladas florentine are better than their cheese enchiladas and so I end up giving in and paying 10 extra bucks and going with them instead.
If you are looking for authentic Mexican food the flea market is where it's at! Tex Mex wise la tapatia on Richmond is pretty good as well as chipoltupec on Richmond(I suggest the eggchiladas. Cheese enchiladas with a fried egg on top). There is a place on wallisville rd called Los Reyes that has pretty amazing tacos.(I suggest the lengua)
Hell yes! Their lemonade is the bomb as well. Love that place. My favorite dish is fajita enchiladas. I usually hit up Doneraki's when I go home, but Don Carlos in second ward is pretty solid. Again though, the problem is its in second ward.
Chuy's (love the new mexican martini) and Cyclone Annaya's - the latter for its quality and the former for being cheap but still good.
