Well just the other day i downloaded the new Staind album, "Illusion of Progress",(which by the way comes out in stores Aug19th). So it came to my mind, which other band out there was really known for deep lyrics because in my opinion, some of Staind songs are just wicked deep lyrically.
hey thanks for advising me about Staind having a new record. I love their stuff and will def. buy the new one. they are very deep - and I am pretty deep so I appreciate that in a band. I've been listening to alot of XTC lately. They were seriously deep, but not always in a sombre way which is nice. Often quirky, Often sarcastic. Andy Partridge is one of the most under appreciated lyrical genius' of all time.
Cinco Dudes original name was Lyrical Cohesion. just thought I'd toss that out to old-timers who remember the Axiom album.
Well, depends on your meaning of deep. As far as a unique way of saying things, I would nominate: The Who- and these are 3 songs from just one of their albums: I see myself on T.V., I'm a faker, a paper clown It's clear to all my friends that I habitually lie; I just bring them down I claim proneness to exaggeration But the truth lies in my frustration The children of the night, they all pass me by Have to drench myself in brandy In sleep I'll hide But however much I booze There ain't no way out I've got that numb-to-a-thumb over-dubbed Feeling social when the world is sleeping The plot starts to thicken then I sicken and I feel I'm cemented down I'm so juiced that the whorey lady's sad sad story has me quietly weeping But here comes the morning Here comes the yawning demented clown When I first signed a contract It was more than a handshake then I know it still is But there's a plain fact We talk so much sh** behind each other's backs I get the willies People know nothing about their own soft gut So how come they can sum us up Without suffering all the hype we've known How come they bum us up How many friends have I really got?
I would say the most interesting lyricists would include: 1. Pete Townshend 2. Ray Davies 3. Michael Stipe 4. Bob Dylan 5. Neil Peart 6. Roger Waters 7. Smokey Robinson 8. Sly Stone 9. John Fogerty 10. Springsteen 11. Elvis Costello 12. Thom Yorke 13. Chuck Berry 14. Peter Gabriel 15. David Byrne 16. Marvin Gaye 17. Joe Strummer 18. Chrissie Hynde 19. Joni Mitchell 20. Ronnie Van Zandt There are 100s of others, some of whom are better than the ones I listed, but you can't go wrong with those 20.
100% agreed. how many albums can one band make just crying about how sad and miserable they are. all staind does is cry about mommy issues. too bad. Dysfunction was kick ass. since then, all downhill mass produced-made for radio and MTV-electric sobbing. they need to ge back to this kinda music....... <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/IMWTuz_PfuY&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/IMWTuz_PfuY&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Chino Moreno.(Deftones) end of story. Modest Mouse, they kinda went mainstream though. Mars Volta. Taproot. Chevelle is an excellent lyrical band. Sigur Ros(lol). If you are able to take Eminem for what he's worth(another mass produced product) I think he's actually quite brilliant. Eddie Veddar, althouh I don't really care for Pearl Jam, he's pretty good.
Dido has very deep lyrics, you can get a lot of meanings for one song, they are very deep Also Jewel is a very nice songwriter!
