I already have Spybot, AdAware, and A2 to look for spyware and trojans, etc. Also have ZoneAlarm as my firewall. Any good free anti-virus scanners you would recommend?
Thanks a lot guys. Looks like they're going to discontinue their free version at the end of the year. But I'll use this until then.
I don't think there are any really good freeware AV products. Most of them are so-so/average at best. One that's gaining popularity is this one : http://sourceforge.net/projects/clamwin/, but with not much history behind it, it's a risk, I suppose.
Walmart sells NAV 2K5 for only $39.99. I bought it last weekend. WELL WORTH IT. Don't skimp when it comes to anti-virus software!
It's not free, but I (and others) say the best is Kaspersky. Download the trial, it'll give you like 15 days or something.
If you're a college student, your school might offer symantec for free with free live updates. Now the question about the installer file, even though you're out of college, if you run the installer file, will it still update?
I second this one. Panda is great. I like Kaspersky a tiny bit better, but Panda is a fantastic choice!
I used to use Kaspersky (formerly known as AVP when I used it). It was the best for a few years, then things fell apart and they're coming back up. I may get it as my 3rd scanner. In my opinion, Eset NOD32 is the best AV tool today. Tomorrow, who knows? The effectiveness of these tools change from month-to-month. Over the past couple of years, really only Norton could come close to touching NOD32's ability to catch ItW viruses. I use Norton and Eset. I'd also agree with drapg : don't skimp on AV tools if you can help it.
MS and Computer Associates has a free one year trial with their EZ Trust software. All you have to do is register with a valid/junk email. http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/...3784198C472&jsessionid=2a30609421099301678633 I usually disable the firewall, but the antivirus scanner is mostly invisible and effective. It also scans web executables and active X files while you're surfing the net. Haven't had a problem since. Not bad for $40 software....
Kaspersky had a REALLY bad period when KAV 4 was out. Now that 5 is here, I think they're coming back strong.
They also said they will have a new AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition coming out soon. Does anyone know anything about the new free edition? Is it going to be as good as AVG 6.0?
