I am of course going to be a little biased towards India. There is this one movie called "Lagaan" which is recieving heavy consideration for a Best Foreign Film nomination at the Oscars. I've heard its the favourite to win it.

Its a sport movie and I would recommend anyone who is into movies and sports to watch it. Probably the best movie I have ever seen.

Maybe you should add in the facts that this movie that your talking about is over 3 hours and it is on Cricket, and half of the movie is of playing the match. It's long and rather BORING and definitely not the best movie of the year. I thought that the indian movie K3G was MUCH MUCH better and very enjoyable even though the movie is also pretty long.

Everybody knows Indian movies are long ;) I have yet to hear anything bad about Lagaan from anyone except you. I guess everyone has their taste. Anyways what is "K3G"?

This should be open and shut. The best foreign film ever made is undeniably Shichinin no samurai (The Seven Samurai).

The humour, depth of character, amazing cinematography, the acting, and the great action scenes are all light years ahead of just about any other film ever made.

Other exceptional foreign films that I have seen:

    Trzy kolory: Bialy
    Trois couleurs: Bleu
    Trois couleurs: Rouge

This is the three colors trilogy, directed by Krzysztof Kieslowski. All are very good, and blue and red are outstanding.

Le Notti di Cabiria (Nights of Cabiria) is my favorite Fellini movie.

I'm not going to list English-language foreign films b/c they tend to be mainstream enough so as not to really be foreign...

I saw Like Water For Chocolate 3 times in the theatre. Great date movie. Funky sensual magic flights of fancy in typical Mexican style.

I also really like Solaris which is a Russian/Soviet sci-fi movie based on a book by Stanaslaw Lem. It sort of has this sullen, depressive, resigned Soviet malaise that sort of defines the Russian character, IMO.

La Femme Nikita was a great flick with Jean Reno playing a typical Jean Reno character. It had the same French hyperstylized Nihilism that characterized one of my favorite American movies that took place in France, 'Killing Zoe'.

I saw this one film, the eight day. It was really good.

Also there was this spanish film with Antoneo Banderas int it. Women on the verge of a nervous breakdown, i think . I forget the title. It was one of the funniest movies I had seen. I only wish I spoke spanish so I could pick up on the sarcasim better. IF you see these check them out I sure enjoyed them

My vote goes to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

    Life is Beautiful ranks second.

The best one I've seen recently was Amelie. Shower was good too.

I guess I am the only one that HATED that movie. God it was so boring! I mean the special effects were awesome, but the story line was toooo slow.

Give me an old black and white kung fu movie anyday over CTHD

    Gallipoli (Australian)

the Vanishing (French or Belgian)* - note that this was re-made into an extremely crappy Hollywood film that should be avoided at all costs. See the original.

    Rockets03,

If you want to get more responses, start a thread on "Weirdest Foreign Films"

My submissions would be The Tin Drum and The Butcher Boy

If you liked Amelie, you should check out some other films by the same director, Jean-Pierre Juenet. Try Delicatessen and The City of Lost Children. He also did Alien Ressurection.

If you haven't seen any Fellini, 8 1/2 is amazing.

Well, it was filmed in Great Britain, I believe. And the leading actor was British...

    Life is Beautiful
    Amelie
    Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
    Akira
    El Mariachi
