50's 60's 70's 80's 90's Simple poll question. Inspired by the 70's station my employer currently has playing in the office. Which decade do you feel produced the best music, including rock, soul, country, and for the later years rap. my vote goes to the seventies. I started with the fifties because I think it is considered the decade pop culture as we now see was born and I didn't include this decade because it isn't over.
I love the 80's but mainly for the pop songs (especially the one-hit wonders) and there are lots of good things that came out of the '60s but it wasn't until '64 that it got like that. So, I picked the '70s because there seemed to be good stuff every year of that decade plus that is when some of my all-time favorite bands/artists were at their zenith: Floyd, Zeppelin, Bowie, Queen, Roxy Music, Genesis, Yes, ELP, Neil Young, etc.
I wanted to start a thread about "Best Rock Songs With A Mandolin" but it's a little too limited so if you think of one just put it in this one. Maggie May - Faces Gallows Pole - Led Zeppelin Battle of Evermore - Led Zeppelin Going to California - Led Zeppelin Back In The High Life - Steve Winwood Amy - Pure Prarie League Mandolin Rain - Bruce Hornsby
The 80's introduced the world to so many new genres: heavy metal, pop music, techno, rap, and new wave. Rap Public Enemy NWA Kool Mo Dee Big Daddy Kane LL Cool J Rock Van Halen Def Leppard Journey Foreigner INXS U2 Poison Skid Row Whitesnake New Wave Depeche Mode Erasure New Order OMD Pet Shop Boys Tears for Fears The Cure Pop Go Go's Bananarama Huey Lewis Paula Abdul Steve Winwood Jefferson Starship Toto Phil Collins Peter Cetera Wham
Unequivicibly, it's 64-74 or 65-75. I hope you don't honestly believe the 80s "introduced" pop, metal, or techno (offshoot of Disco). I can give you a pass on rap, since it's not widespread common knowledge that it came from the early/mid 70s. The 80s introduced hair bands and the idea that video sold music better than music. Evan
I grew up in the 90's but I like the 80's music the most. My friends said I am weird and I agree with them.
The 70s is the best decade for Music w/ all the classic rock (Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Cream, Doobie Bros, etc...). But I probabl listen to the 80s the most...Baqui put together a nice little list.
Hard to go against the 60's with Motown and the Beatles, but I'm going with the 70's based on the breadth of music. When you start out with the Beatles last album (Let It Be) and end the decade with two walls (The Wall, Off The Wall) with allsorts of goodies in between, it's hard to top the 1970's. I'd say between 1976 and 1985. All the great bands put out their best stuff in that time period. The Police, Rush, Van Halen, U2, RHCP's, Ozzy (both Randy Rhodes albums), etc.
Techno and disco aren't really the same genre. The 80s' brought the electronic music to the forefront with faster beats and a different sound. You can make the argument that Grandmaster Flash, Rick James, James Brown and the Sugar Hil Gang founded rap/funk/soul in the 70's, but those sound nothing like Public Enemy, NWA, etc. Not sure about the metal piece, but I always thought guys like Quiet Riot, Megadeth, Pantera, Sepultura, etc paved that road.
I bid : The Beatles The Stones Led Zepplin 1 Motown Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker and BB King Black Sabbath, Steppenwolf, Canned Heat, Jefferson Airplane,Byrds and Hendrix Music sorta lost it's head in the later 70's. You have to deduct points for Disco.
My vote goes to the 70's. The disco era almost veto'd that vote but thank's to Rimrocker dusting off his old LP's I'm reminded of some amazing music.
