Listening to my music, Quietdrive was playing and it got me thinking: What are other covers of "classic" music from the 70s/80s/90s that you think are as good or better than the original (I guess techno remixes included)? Quietdrive's Time After Time (cover of Cyndi Lauper) <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/rvmumINKapg&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/rvmumINKapg&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
Not an cover of an old song, but.. I really like this recent REM cover of Editors' "Munich". Three of a Perfect Pair - KING CRIMSON 6. Us and Them - PINK FLOYD 7. Geek U.S.A. - SMASHING PUMPKINS 8. Forced March - Earth Crisis 9. Territory - SEPULTURA 10. Change - BLIND MELON 11. Someone did a cover version of Comfortably Numb in the movie "The Departed" ......its actually the first time anyone has been able to cover a Pink Floyd song to my liking frankly, IMO, Pink Floyd is one of the more impossible bands to try and do a cover song on
How bout this cover, no? <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/E4KQGeTpRBE"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/E4KQGeTpRBE" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
"I Fought the Law" The Clash "Gloria" Patti Smith "Star Spangled Banner" & "All Along the Watchtower" & "Like a RollingStone" Jimi Hendrix
Here's some my favorite 'covers', great for your IPOD if you're doing a cover song set: All Along The Watchtower - Hendrix or Dave Mason You Really Got Me - Van Halen Kashmir - Dred Zepplin Statesboro Blues - The Allman Brothers Sharp Dressed Man -C.J. Cheneir Lowrider - Los Lobos Route 66 -Asleep At The Wheel - Nervous Breakdown - Nighthwks Midnight Train - Jonny Lang & Buddy Guy Well Alright - Santana The Blues is really too incestuous to even call them cover songs or I could list 100.
Chris Cornell - Billie Jean One of the kids on American Idol sang his version also. I don't watch American Idol, but a friend sent me the link, and I was impressed. I like these kind of covers. <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/c2MgwAJrfXo&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/c2MgwAJrfXo&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
The best cover ever is "All Along the Watchtower" by Hendrix. It even influenced the way Dylan played it in concerts after he heard it. Other favorites of mine that haven't been mentioned yet: "Hurt" by Johnny Cash - Even better when you watch the music video. "Landslide" by Smashing Pumpkins - I actually prefer it to the Stevie Nicks version. I just wish the Dixie Chunks hadn't gone and butchered it. "Dancing Days" by Stone Temple Pilots - Again, I prefer this to the Led Zeppelin version. Scott Weiland's vocals are vastly superior IMO. "Higher Ground" by Red Hot Chili Peppers - It's not easy tackling a Stevie Wonder song from his prime, but the Chili Peppers pulled it off. "A Hazy Shade of Winter" by the Bangles - Maybe it's because it was sung by a bunch of hot chicks, but I always liked the Bangles' take on it more than Simon & Garfunkel. "Live and Let Die" by Guns N' Roses - A great cover of a great Bond song. "Mad World" by Gary Jules - If you've seen Donnie Darko, you know how great this tune is. "Voodoo Child(slight return) by Stevie Ray Vaughan - Better than Hendrix which I feel almost dirty saying. "Wonderwall" by Ryan Adams - I like the Oasis version, but the cover blows it away.
white stripes - death letter (son house) ryan adams - down in a hole (alice in chains) led zeppelin - in my time of dying (blind willie johnson)
Higher Ground - RHCP (Stevie Wonder) Joan of Arc - Jennifer Warnes (Leonard Cohen) Physical (You're So) - NIN (Adam Ant) Black Steel - Tricky (Public Enemy) All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix Experience (Bob Dylan) Eight Miles High - Roxy Music (The Byrds) Make the World Go Away - Elvis Presley (Eddy Arnold) Gloria - The Doors (Them Featuring Van Morrison) Bein' Green - Van Morrison (Joe Raposo aka songwriter for Sesame Street) Don't Let It Bring You Down - Annie Lennox (Neil Young)
