Fu's Garden in the Rice Village is good, but my favorite Chinese Restaurant is The Empress, on 1960 near the Champions area.

Feng Ling (way out Westheimer, just past HW 6) get the Feng Ling Orange Beef ... they specialize in Peking Duck as well...call to order that ahead of time. This is a place where families dress up, as I recall.

for excellent, cheaper fare (under $6)

Chinese Cafe on Bellaire just past Gessnar. Ignore the decor; but trust me. This is no frills. Get the Double Spicey Beef. Just rice and a bowl of meat w/great sauce...yummy. If you like eqgplant, they have an outstanding sauce with that dish. There is actually 3 of these Cafe's now, 2 still under original ownership. The Belliare/Chinatown one is the original, but there is one in Windsor Plaze at Richmond/610 across from Cost Plus; it is just as good and more centrally located near the Galleria. This has repeatedly been recommended by Chinese friends as the closest to making them homesick...included two who cooked there while in grad school.

Damn, I just made my mouth water. I'm going to Chinese Cafe tonight.

I went to China Bear @ Freeway 59 and Kirkwood the other day and it was really good for a buffet style restaurant. 5.99 for a lunch buffet, and 7.99 at night. It had a ton of food, there was a lot food that you wouldn't normally find at a buffet, like sushi, raw salmon, crab balls, fried battered squid, etc. Gotta love the fired battered squid.

I work near Hunan Village, and you can't beat their price on the lunch specials, $3.95 for sweet and sour pork, fried rice, eggroll, and soup.

This isn't Chinese, but you have to try some Pho, it is beef noodle soup. Pho Cong Ly @ Belliare and Wilcrest is a good place.

I like Auntie Chang's Dumpling House in the Randall's shopping center on Westheimer and Shepherd.

I don't care for their eggrolls, but their General Joe's Chicken rocks! Excellent lunch specials with entree, tea, soup and crunchy fried noodles is a great bargain!!

    hmmm... may go there tomorrow.

Hunan's on Post Oak next to Americas is pretty nice if you don't mind a slightly more snooty atmosphere. Also, supposedly former president Bush (the first one) eats here, though I've never seen him.

A step down the formality/price scale, Kam's on montrose has the best dumplings I have ever had anywhere, and the Fu's Garden in the Village makes a great sesame chicken (specificaly this location, the other restraunts are alright, but not as exemplary as this one).

On the cheap, I have to agree with rockHEAD with Auntie Changs. They have a particular style thats almost 'homey' for lack of a better word. All their vegetables are cut by hand to slightly different porportions. Among the 3rd tier places (there are a couple of tiers of cheaper chineese... thinking about them makes me shiver:( ) Auntie Chang's stands out because it's just a little different.

I agree with Feng Ling. My buddies that live right by there took me there bout a month ago and I go there at LEAST once a week. Actually there is a closer one on Westhemier, pass Fountainview and before Hilcroft/Voss. Its in front of some apartments and its the same building strip as Miyako.

They have the best lunch specials. I order the General Tso Chicken. Its the best I have tasted PERIOD. Plus with Rice, eggroll, soup and Ice Tea for $4.50, as Olajuwon would say "UN-BEA-TA-BLE"

Check out Jade Village, in a shopping center at the southwest corner of Gessner and Harwin. Best Cantonese food in Houston.

Chinese Cafe on Richmond. You can't place a bad order there. For something unusual, but out of this world good, try the Mustard Green, Pelt Bean, and Smoked Tofu dish. You won't miss not having meat.

Well, I had the "Double Spicy Beef" at "Chinese Cafe" by Bellaire and Gessner. HOLY COW THAT WAS GOOD . . . and OH SO SPICY!

    Good pick guys.

Another good one is Kam's, located on Montrose Blvd. right where it crosses under Hwy 59, on the opposite side of 59 from the Sierra Grill and Redwood Grill. It's in a small strip center on the west side of Montrose. Killer lunch specials.
