I've heard rumors, but I'm willing to listen. There has to be a quintessential Houston locale for this staple. I'm all ears, gents.
If you are looking for an old fashioned comfort food version, BBQ Inn has been rated the best several times.
where is the chicken !?!? I never got why they call it a chicken fried steak. Too bad that I missed the chicken fried steak episode on food network's Good Eats.=( sorry that I can't help FFB. Every place in which i've tried chicken fried steak, It's been uber salty and not to my liking.
Hickory Hallow, recommended to me by Rocketman Tex, makes amazing and giant CFSs. Buffalo Grille has a good one. Ouisie's Table
hickory hollow has a good one BBQ Inn is OK (but they have the best Fried Shrimp in the city) My favorite is at Pappy's on 10 between Cambel and Voss Go with the Double Fries, no salad, extra gravy on the side and thank me later.
Try Texas Roadhouse .. I have tried a lot of different places, many of which claim 'Best Chicken Fried Steak', blah blah blah. Most of them are 'meh', ESPECIALLY Hickory Hollow. But Texas Roadhouse's CFS is hands-down the best I have ever had.
Saltgrass does it pretty good, maybe somebody messed up. The only time I've ever had one that was too salty was at Rio Ranch and I just sent it back and they gave me a new one. I don't like the way they serve it there though, putting it ontop of the mashed potatos is stupid.
I would recommend: Mel's Country Kitchen in Tomball Dot's Coffee Shop Goodson's Cafe Red River BBQ in League City Saltgrass Pretty much in that order. I will try Pappy's and Texas Roadhouse very soon and will report back. Damn...now I'm hungry.
hickory hollow is pretty good for sure. definitely loved the venison CFS from ouisie's table... great restaurant. mel's diner in tomball is the winner in this one, though. best CFS ever.
i know i'm going to get flammed for this but... I LOVED Grandy's Chicken Fried Steak growing up, too bad they closed all of them in Houston
for some reason, my favorite, by far, is Razzoos. just had some the other night, cold, and still loved it.
