Marcus Camby is having a hell of a year. No Doubt. And his defense and rebounding is as good as it will ever be for him. But when he starts getting double teamed and tripled team, and teams go all out to do everything they can to deny him the ball, to keep him from scoring, then we'll talk. I don't think teams are playing Denver saying 'Ok how are we going to stop Marcus Camby.' They may have to in the future, but they aren't now.
Niether does Yao.....all you have to do is stick a physical person on him and he's done. Remember Mourning(35 yrs old) and Boris Diaw(6' 7')
s Remember Shaq? Play Yao straight up and he will kill you. Play Camby straight up and he'll get break out with 17 a night. Do I remember Mourning? I remember Yao embarrassing and wearing that old man out for the most part. About Diaw? basketball is not that simplisitc. It's never just stick this guy on him. You weren't watching closely enough if you think Boris Diaw was out there on an island guarding Yao. Their team defense was geared toward stopping Yao and not letting him get the ball. It worked. Diaw was the first man on him, but their team defense leaned and showed toward Yao all game. They were not going to let him beat them and our other players minus Tmac were not able to make them pay for cheating toward Yao. Point is, Yao is giving you 19 a night while being double teamed while Camby is giving you 17 a night while being played man to man. Defenses don't prepare and plan to stop Camby like they do with Yao. That's why Yao is the better center, imo.
But there are constantly players cheating over from the weak side trying to collapse on Yao when the entry pass is made. The weak side defender also makes it possible for the main defender to front Yao. This being said Yao always has the attention of at least 2 defenders. I voted for Yao not because he is having the best year or because he should start over Camby in the all star game...but because he is more likely to dominate during the games and because he effects the game differently than Camby. This is not a knock on Camby who is having a great and consistant year but it is a fact.
yes you posted this on a rockets fan site i wonder who will win? and texas stoke hit the nail on the head
Center is the most pathetic position in the league right now. If you get stats like 15pts 8 or 9 rebs, you are among the elites. But Camby is having an exceptional year, so right now I will say he is the best. Yao has always been steady, no great improvement but gets better every year. Always a quality player.
But i have to admit Camby is far better defender and rebounder than yao even though yao is far superior offensive player than camby!
Hmmmm..... Camby deserves a double team because....? Yao gets double teamed before he has the ball because his teammates consist of Wesley, Head, Bowen, and JHo.... TROLL ALERT!
Camby is a superior defender, and Yao is a superior offensive force and demands a lot more attention/respect. I would love to have both mate and then produce the perfect center: dominant on defense and offense. However, since that's not possible, I will take Yao every day of the week.
Why am I not surprised Ubigred feels this way about Yao and started this thread. Here are a sample of some of his/her recent posts: Ubigred don't let your disappointment or hatred blind you. Ask yourself why the results come out the way they do, instead of having kneejerk negative reactions. Really, have some objectivity.
Right now Camby is one of the best players in the league. He's on the best player on his team and last time I checked Denver had a much better record than Houston does.
Camby is having a better year for sure, but that dosent automaticly equate to being better. from what i've seen, camby cant creat anything for himself, while yao hasthat terrefic foot work and has long range shot, hence he is better at creating a shot for himself.on defense is where camby excels. his shot blocking and defensive awarness is far superiore to yao. but the most improtant factor yao has going for him, is his ability to change a game by himself. he can creat open looks for others, because teams allways resort to double teaming him. camby is'nt that kind of threat.
By the numbers, you have to go with Camby. I never suspected he could put up those kind of stats. He benefits from having Kenyon Martin, Carmelo Anthony, and Andre Miller in particular as teammates. The couple games I saw, he got a lot of easy alley-oop dunks when his defender lost track of him. But it's not really a fair comparison. Yao is still doubled without the ball, even with McGrady back. Last night there were two guys on Yao anytime he ventured near the post. In fact, anytime Ryan Bowen plays, the opposing teams park their guys in Yao's lap. Anytime they feel a lob headed towards Yao, their weakside perimeter guys shade towards Yao. Phoenix didn't just have Diaw playing Yao, they had Marion sandwiching him too. And Yao was killing Alonzo inside, rooting him underneath the basket and dunking on him repeatedly. It wasn't until they started fronting and sending help his way that the Heat started having success containing Yao. Same story with Detroit. Ben Wallace and Rasheed couldn't handle Yao inside either, without help.
Camby was allways a good player. I remember the season the Knicks went from the 8th seed to the Finals, camby was a monster. Injuries along the way have restricted his game immensly.
