This reminds me of the 2002-2003 Rockets Season going into the 2003-2004 season. I mean more in the results more than anything The 2002-03 was a brutally disappointing season. Playoffs were in hand until Rudy went down. It slipped away. So we got a new coach. JVG In this senario . . we kind of getting a new coach instead of KubiBush we now get KubiPhillips 2003-2004 we got into the playoffs. Lost to the Lakers in the 1st round. Continued to either miss the playoffs or become 1st round fodder for the next 3 year [2004-05, 2005-06,2006-07] Then came in Adelman Lost in the 1st round again. So we were no worse Then . . BINGO WE WENT TO THE SECOND ROUND I say that to say this . . . Kubiphillips maybe better than Kubibush but they still not THE GUY the best case senario is they back into the playoffs and get run every year. . . . we will be talking about we are THIS CLOSE While some like Ric maybe satisfied with that . . .well I won't be It will be ok for next year. . maybe even the next If Kubiak makes the playoffs next year [let's say they are 10-6]. . . do you think McNair extends him again? [I mean he will be going into the final year of his contract after next year correct?] For YOUR tastes . . . if they go 10-6 and lose in the 1st round next year How many more seasons does it earn him? How about 10-6 the last two years of his contract? Rocket River
If I was the owner who had just made this decision to keep him, they would, at a minimum, have to go 10-6 or better AND win a playoff game. Just getting there isn't good enough, especially after this year's massive FAIL. Even then, I'm not sure if I would extend his contract because that's accepting the "just be happy to get there" mindset.
Why even talk about best case scenarios anymore? Schobel, cleaning house, Cowher, etc...it's in ten foot neon at this point that McNair is far less concerned with best football decision than he is best budget decision. The fans let him get away with it, so why would he start taking a hit in the wallet just to have a team win more? McNair hung out with Bum, decided to go with another "give my kid the job" hire (Alex/David Gibbs), and they will make Wade Phillips coach after giving a couple of farce interviews for show. Have fun, McNair. Made the other sheep keep lining your pockets, but I'm turning off the financial enabling from my house.
Can't compare NFL playoffs to NBA playoffs. Most teams good enough to get in the playoffs are capable of getting hot and advancing pretty far, unlike in the NBA where you usually have heavy favorites in the first round. I think we're good enough to make the playoffs, but not on a consistent basis. More often than not, this staff will have us with 7 or 8 wins. I hate to see my team quit, but the best case scenario is probably another lackluster season next year with the players giving up on the staff. Kubiak gets fired, Wade takes over but still makes no impact. Then we go after Cowher, Gruden, or another winning coach.
fify. anyone who dares compare mcnair to drayton deserves a swift kick in the nuts. followed by a series of even swifter kicks to the taint.
It makes you wonder what it would be like to have an owner who wasn't such a nice guy, good ol' boy, aw shucks, full of integrity and class, kind of owner. Can you imagine if Enron was still around and someone like Jeff Skilling bought the team? Yeah, I know he's a scumbag, but do you think someone like that would give a crap about the bottom line if he had a chance to WIN? Do you think he would think twice about canning a guy who wasn't performing? Do you think he would hesitate for a SECOND at taking a chance on a guy like Cower to come in and start from scratch if he thought it would pay off in the end? Kind of weird thinking it may be a BAD thing for your owner to actually have class....but maybe the NFL isn't cut out for guys with class and integrity.
This is true. How about Rich Kinder? Hell, I'll bet if he would have bought the team in the first place instead of McNair, Kubiak would've been gone a year ago. Rich...please buy the Texans from Bob McNair. PLEASE.
Best case scenario? 1993 Houston Oilers. Team brings in a big name defensive coordinator. Team responds. Defensive coordinator punches another coach in the face.
The flip side to that argument would be to have an owner like Donald Sterling. Jeffry Skilling IS a scumbag, and that's why somebody like him would have no problem low-balling players, cutting costs at every opportunity, and continuing to live off of revenue sharing, all while getting richer and richer himself. I'm all for criticizing McNair for the decisions that he has made, but let's not get carried away. Being a good person is NEVER a bad thing.
Sorry about the double post, but OMGLOL. I would literally pay $1 million dollars to watch Gary Kubiak and Wade Phillips duke it out on the sideline. Seriously.
Only if they keep the name Texans. That would be really odd - like Utah keeping the name "Jazz" when Utah sucks.
He's certainly the best out of this good old boy system the Texans use, but my issue is that this stinks of yet another hire ahead of the interview process. I don't believe for one second that they took a good look around the league for the best possible fit for the job, and I don't think it's a coincidence at all that Bum was talking about the Texans next to Bob just a week before his son was getting floated around as the new DC. The other thing that riles me is that What Just Happened Phillips is now next in line to be head coach.
While I’m not wholly happy with McNair’s decisions this week (my biggest fear was that Kubiak could convince him to give Bush one more year), and I’m among those starting to fear he might be our biggest problem - in theory, I’d much prefer a patient owner to a knee-jerk owner. Drayton was patient for many years. But his growing flights of fancy have been detrimental to the long-term stability of his franchise.
I'll be very interested to see if Mike Nolan is among the guys they interview, especially if he gets blown out with Sporano in Miami. Former Bronco with ties to the Shannahan era, he was the guy I wanted when they handed the DC job to Bush. Re; Phillips - I think McNair is in LOVE with the idea of the local-boy-done-good angle. And I can certainly see the appeal. I have no toruble concluding that Kubiak cares more about the *HOUSTON* Texans than a Bill Cowher would. But that small-town attitude is no way to run your mutli-billion dollar franchise.
A Rod Marinelli-like 0-16 season would be the bitter pill that Bob McNair needs to swallow in order to wake up from his fantasy mamby pamby land where everybody loves Gary Kubiak and keeps battle-fightin'.
