I just bought a new car (new to me anyway) and i was looking to put some new speakers in the car. Its a small 2 door coupe which has only 4 speakers (older car). In my last car i replaced the original speakers with pioneer, i don't wanna make that mistake again cause i was very disappointed in the sound. There are too many speakers on the market and i really don't know which is good so i was hoping if you guys can share some insight with me. Brands and model number would help. I am looking for something that is all around great, (hi, mid, lows, bass). Thanks folks! Door speakers please
If you are truly looking to improve your sound, then I assume you're asking about components, where you need a separate amp, and the woofer and tweeter are installed in separate locations of your door. If you mean just 6x9 then don't expect that much improvement from your Pioneer experience. Pioneeer isn't even a bad brand, their REV series won several awards earlier this decade. As far as popular brands for components, JL, Focal, Infinity, and Boston Acoustics are probably the most well known. This means you would be able to find them locally and would be able to give them a test listen, as that's the most important thing to do. It's a very subjective field, and reading other people's descriptions of sound quality is a just fraction of how effective getting a test listen is.
As soon as I bought my current car I replaced all 4 stock speakers with Polk (dont remember the model but I think its the db series). If you truly want a good sound, get an amp in addition to replacing the speakers. http://www.polkaudio.com/caraudio/speakers-systems.php#db
"Best" implies you have an unlimited budget. You also kind of need to know the size of speakers you need. Also, "best" speakers usually sound "best" when they're driven by a good amp - something that usually doesn't come with stock systems.
I don't follow car audio much, but several years ago, when I did, JL Audio, MB Quart, Boston Acoustics, Focal, etc. were some of the best brands you could get. Of course for 95% of the people that bought them, any Sony, Kenwood, Infinity, etc. would've sounded just as good and been less expensive probably.
Hey Nate, there are a few questions you need to answer yourself before moving on to choosing speakers.... The first question is what kind of music do you listen to? and what do you want out of your car audio system. Some people want alot of bass and some want alot sq ( sound quality)... The size of your speakers will also determine the overall performance and if you are willing to add an amp and a sub/subs..... The stereo unit you will be using also comes in play in getting high quality sound. Now about speakers, there are hundreds of speakers to choose from and different types...... While component speakers offer the best sound quality they are also expensive and depending on your car, might need alot of work put in for installation. These components speakers also need a proper amp to actually get your money's worth out of them. Regular coax car speakers are the ones you can find anywhere.... This is the more inexpensive yet efficient way to have great sound (if you know what you are doing)...... These are the speakers I recommend.... Good to Better to Best Kicker Ds eries, (if you want these I can get you a great price on them) http://www.kicker.com/ds_series Polk Db speakers also sound great for the price Now for my Fav brand in car audio Elemental Design They're speakers go from $200 http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_info.php?cPath=1_108&products_id=547 All the way to $900 Really bro I need your help thou, do you want alot of bass? what is your budget? What size of speakers does your car have? if the speakers are too small then it will be pretty hard to get some decent bass out of them..... Just le me know man...
Maybe you could just opt for a subwoofer? Maybe your ears are pretty well trained and are sensitive to the improvements made to the upper soundband, but for the most part a subwoofer (not obnoxiously powered) is the most cost effective way of improving your listening experience. Fills out the lower end which in most car systems are lacking, and you can have the signal coming from your rear speakers. New in door components would likely require you to replace the original head unit.
Thanks. The car i have is nothing special (Mirage coupe; 4" in front and 6 3/4" in back i believe) but i am stuck on if i want to make this a project car or not. I always wanted to take a P.O.S car and work on it piece by piece. Everything is stock right now so i need to get a head unit first. I Really didn't plan on putting in anything big like 2 12' subs or anything like that. I just want quality good sounding speakers. I believe i will put maybe 1 10" sub. You mentioned something about hooking up an amp....? i thought an amp was only for the bigger speakers? You can hook up an amp to the door speakers? As you can see i don't know too much on this subject. Also i listen to all types of music; mainly Hip hop and country (weird combo huh?) As far as bass goes i just want a solid thump without the car shaking of giving me a headache.
I'm gonna suggest that you invest in a way to get the speakers "tuned" for your car. This can be done if your deck has some sort of decent equalization. The reason I say this is that while you might buy a great pair of speakers that have flat frequency response in a sound room but sound terrible in your car. You need to adjust the frequency response of your speakers to fit the acoustic conditions of your vehicle.
Man bro, I have a 1990 Toyota Supra and I have almost $10,000 invested in it and the car is still nowhere near great condition. The reason I do it is passion and love for the car. What kind of goals do you have for you mirage and is it worth it at the end. I prob wouldnt get $4,000 for my car if I sold it as of today..... It would have been 3 years gone to waist not only for my pocket but for my time and effort. Think about your car, is it something that will be boring to drive in 2 years? it would really suck to fix it up nice and then sell it for almost nothing.... Now about your speakers, the size on your car speakers are ok.... They are still small and this is a problem for you bass.... Yes you can hook up an amp to your speakers but it has to be a speaker amp instead of a monoblock/subwoofer amp. I would mostly recommend this for high end really expensive component speakers. On your car man, I would do 4 kicker Ds siries speakers and a small 10 inch or larger 12 Memphis Pr inch subwoofer powered by a one a channel monoblock amp. I am sure this set up is more than sufficient for what you want.... What does your budget look like? I can prob get you this whole set up for under $300... I have a friend who has a vendor permit for Kicker....
Thanks for the info man and the offer man. Right now i am doing my "pre- shopping/ research" right now. I could message you later when i am ready to buy if that's cool with you. I noticed browsing that most of these non component speakers have similar Specs. At least it seems that way yo me. On the other hand these component speakers have better specs. What are those boxes that come with the component speakers?
The boxes are crossovers, they devide the bass from the highs.... If you buy a component set up then you will hook up your system to the crossover and then go from the crossover to the woofer and tweeter..... But really man, do not look at the specs soo much.... The peak power is not what you can actually push throu them.... Look for the rms watt, that is a much closer number to what you can actually feed the speaker.... Still most brands raise that number alot..... Components can handle alot more power then regular coax speakers like the first link.... Either way, this is where the magic of it all is... Too much power to the speaker and you will sound bad, too little power and you will sound bad.....
Looking at all these speakers got my head spinning! The way i always look at things that i don't know much about is "the more expensive the better" that's why i was looking at the components. But you seem to know what your talking about so i may take your advice on the Kickers. What i need to do is hear someones system that i really love and copy it. someone recommended these to me.
Ha, yeah.... It does that to ya lol.... Well, more expensive does not always mean better.... Especially if you buy $400 speakers your system will not be able to power properly... Thou, price does come in play when you want the good stuff... This is where the watts dont matter, for example... If I wanted a subwoofer I would much rather get a Memphis Pr that can only handle 150 Rms Watts Vs a Sony Xplod that claims 500 Rms..... The Memphis Pr is better constructed with higher quality materials.... Any rookie will tell me, "main those are weak pshhhh" when in reality two of these powered right can make your ears feel like they will pop..... Those Alpines seem ok for a component set price. Do not get them on Ebay. Try amazon, same speakers cheaper... http://www.amazon.com/Alpine-SPS-600C-Component-Speaker-System/dp/B001447Z8Q Seems like a good buy for the thou... Here is a Kicker ds siries for the same price range http://www.amazon.com/Kicker-07DS65...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1268055996&sr=1-1 Those are ok^^^^ Now if you really want to make things interesting, these are for you... http://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-DB...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1268056139&sr=1-1 Those Polks provide some of the most crisp and clear sound I have ever heard..... Right about now I think its time for you to visit Best Buy or Car Toys and hear the speakers.... When I used to show case car spakers I would always tell customers to hear them out and pick the ones they mostly liked and that would also fit theyre budget..... We have now pin pointed what you want and what best fits your car audio needs..... Now you just have to hear the Alpines vs the Polks...... Polks will win by a mile but I will let you find out lol.....
Just what i needed to hear!! and in excited cause this is a smaller car than im used to so i know it should sound real good!! I am going today to listen and compare these speakers. Next up (which i guess should have been fist) Head unit!
Another question if i may... When i buy these component speakers for the rear it comes with two crossovers and two tweeters, when i buy the 4" for the front door speakers it also comes with the two crossovers and two tweeters. Do i still need the extra crossovers and tweeters that the 4" speakers come with?
