A recent Best Buy ad (hat tip to CrunchGear) promoting the store's Black Friday sales includes a nod to the Muslim holiday Eid Al-Adha, which is celebrated that day.

    Sounds rather innocent, doesn't it?

Instead of being praised for its inclusiveness, Best Buy is being attacked by some customers who have made their views known on the company's message board. Some consumers are particularly irked because the home electronics retailer recently announced that it will no longer put "Merry Christmas" in its flyers.

Conservative groups like the the American Family Association began attacking the retailer in 2006 after the chain said it would replace "Merry Christmas" with "Happy Holidays" in its ads. Best Buy, for its part, denies it has abandoned the C word altogether; it can be found on gift cards and online. The AFA has yet to comment on the ad.

The AFA has also called for a boycott of The Gap for its new holiday commercial which includes shout-outs to Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Solstice, in addition to Christmas.

But there seems to be a small and vocal group of Best Buy customers who don't appreciate the flyer. Some of the colorful customer responses on Best Buy's message board include (please note that these may not accurately reflect the nature of the holiday Eid Al-Adha

i'm not muslim or christian, but what the hell is wrong with putting "Merry Christmas" in an ad?

Most retailers shy away from "Christmas" because it is a direct reference to Christ/Christianity. They usually go with "Happy Holidays/New Year/Season's Greetings" which is more ambiguous/sterile.

It's a dumb PR move by Best Buy to publish a Muslim religious holiday and not a Christian one.

    Dumb, dumb, dumb.

I mean seriously, the "attack on Christmas/America/Jeebus" crowd just loves stuff like this.

Talk about giving a dog a bone.

As a non-Christian and non-Muslim I am not bothered with the inclusion or exclusion of mentioning Eid or Christmas in ads but for those who are religious I'm wondering do you think it cheapens the religious celebration to have them used for advertizing the electronic sales?

I think there's a big difference in using it "in" and ad and "for" an ad.

Like, if you have Mary and the baby Jesus pimping a PS3... that's in poor taste.

Although technically sacreligious. Just referencing the season is not really offensive in my eyes.

I would love to see their rationale for this.

Their rationale is that they live in a country which they think is governed by Jesus. A Jesus whom they think apparently taught that inclusion and tolerance are for p*ssies.

I have no problem with them acknowledging a Muslim holiday. But to do so while avoiding the use of the word "Christmas" is just freakin' stupid. I'm not surprised people got pissed.

Sounds to me like someone in BB's marketing dept didn't do their homework on Eid al-Adha.

It makes no sense to me why retailers don't put Christmas in their ads. After all, folks are buying Christmas gifts. The celebration on 12/25 is known as Christmas. If non-Christians get up in arms about Christmas, then they shouldn't celebrate it.

How many more people do you think using "Christmas" would draw in for sales?

The ad in and of itself does not offend me as a Christian. I like seeing stuff that supports religious holidays. Christianity aint the only game in town. Granted its probably the biggest in the US, but that doesnt mean to ignore the others.

However, including the Islamic holiday but excluding the Christian one was just plain dumb. As Donny said more fuel to the fire for the conspiracy theorists.

I beleive it was combined in Europe. Because if you look at the Jesus birth story in the bible, it was probably mid spring. I believe the tree portion of Christmas was of Germanic origin.

Thats what I dont understand in why businesses refuse to write Christmas in ads and signs and whatever. It's a melting pot holiday, very much like the US as a whole. Sure, its probably nowadays most famous for a Christian holiday, but it has origins from many areas and cultures in Europe.

Not to diminish anything from Christians who celebrate Jesus' birth, as its the accepted time to do that.

Am I the only one to notice the Angels and Demons movie being displayed in the TV?

They mention a muslim holiday, but don't mention Christmas. Out of the thousands of movies to choose from, they pick Angels and Demons, the Da Vinci Code sequel.

The reason to say "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas" is simple - there are other cultures that celebrate other holidays around then and you want to include everyone without specifically pointing out each. You have different religions as well as atheists celebrating during the late December period, and it would be impossible to mention them all.

The Eid Al-Adha included along with Thanksgiving - again, including everyone.

The goal is purely commercial - to include as many people as possible to get people in their stores. If anyone has a better way of including everyone during Christmas time than "Happy Holidays", I'm guessing they'd be happy to consider it. As was pointed out in the article, they do have gift cards and stuff that does mention Christmas specifically.
