I've never been and I thought it'd be a nice treat for my girlfriend and I to celebrate the end of the school year.

What's the best place to go to? Smitty's, Black's, or anywhere else.

I've only been to Kreuz, and it is sensational. I think they are related to Smitty's so maybe it's half a dozen of one and six of the other.

Cool man thanks. I'm about to drive up there for lunch. It's sad I've been in San Marcos so long and never went. I wanted to do my graduation dinner there but I think my Dad wants to go to Gruene.

all 3 of those in lockhart are close enough in quality imo. Smitty's has the experience with the smoker and ordering by the spit and all.. none have good sauce (and might be offended if you ask for it, though it is behind the counter at smittys at least)

agree with above--go to franklin instead. In fact, I just got back from there 30 mins ago..

Only been to Kreuz once with a few "locals"... not bad overall, but I thought it was overrated. Don't get me wrong, the BBQ was very good, but not "OMG, greatest BBQ in the world!!!!!1!!" good.

I've only tried Smitty's and Black's. Smitty's brisket and sausage is the best bbq i have ever eaten. Black's was ok.

I was just there last week and I was so disappointed.

I think Kreuz Market ws the best, but when I went they served me a dry brisket. This was at 1230 on a Saturday. I should have told them to get me a new brisket.

Then I went to Smitty's. The brisket was juicy, but it was bland.

The line for Black's was out of the wazoo, so I didn't go.

I say stay in Austin and go to J Meullers or Franklins. You have to get there early but you won't get dry brisket.

Texas Monthly says Kruez > Smitty's, but both are in the Top 5 in the state, so you probably can't go wrong with either. YMMV, obviously.

When I was in San Marcos I would always go to this BBQ place on Hopkins after it turns in to Hunter Road, close to the outlets. I tried to look up what it was called but I remeber now that it was bought out and just wasn't the same afterwards.

It's called Woody's now... But back in 06-07 that was some damn good BBQ.

For brisket, I prefer Kreuz slightly over Smittys, but it's pretty close.

Went to Smitty's. Brisket and sausage was the bomb. Sweet tea was great. Weird they don't have forks, they knew I was an outsider when I asked haha.

I second this one, when I went to school in San Antonio made a monthly visit to Smitty's.

I get all hyped up when I go to Goode's or Larry's BBQ Buffet, but y'all are making me want to take a road trip. Every time I go to Goode's, I tell myself not to get the 3 meat plate cause I'll never finish it, but I always end up getting the 3 meat anyway.
