Since we're actively discussing Mexican food in another thread, I thought we might toss around some local BBQ joints. My personal favorite is not actually in Houston, but down in Alvin at Joe's BBQ. I hear that Nolan Ryan pops his head in there every so often.
There is a relatively new BBQ place that everyone needs to try. It's called Baker's Ribs and it is located on Voss (Hillcroft) between Westheimer and San Felipe. I believe it is a Dallas chain and this is their first outlet in Houston. I swear on a stack of bibles that they have the best BBQ pork ribs and pulled pork in the city of Houston, I gua-ron-tee! Work up a hunger, and check it out!!!
I live near both Goode Co. and Baker's Ribs. I've never gone to Baker's though I probably will in the future. I can attest to Goode Co being great.
Goode Co. gets my vote too. The jalapeno cheese bread and jalapeno sausage sandwich is my personal favorite. I also like Sam's, which is this rather kitschy place midway between Dallas and Houston on I-45. There's a place in Humble on 1960 (not Luther's) that makes great ribs. Forgot the name unfortunately.
There's a place called The Hungry Farmer off of 45 North... pretty darn good. Goode Co. is my favorite, the juiciest half chicken dinner in town and jalapeno cheese bread that rocks. Otto's on Memorial is pretty good. I like their sauce. oh... on 59 South headed towards Victoria there's a place called Kreuz's and another called Prasek's they are supposed to be the best on the 59 corridor between Houston and Victoria. rH --
Goode Company is pretty good, but if you want the best BBQ in texas, you gotta go to Rudy's in austin or San Antonio. Not real fancy place, but its very very quality. Next time i go, im buying like 3 bottles of the sauce to take with me to college.
Yes. It is a fun place to go and talk with Clyde's mom (behind the cash register) and brother (working the pit), but the BBQ is not as good as other places in the city.
I really like Hickory Hollow just outside the Heights, when I'm not at Goode & Co. They also have stuff like Chicken Fried Steak, and on Fridays & Sat. they usualy have some funky bluegrass band playing live. Sort of a different style place, in a quirky 'Heights' type of way.
Not a popular choice, I'm sure...but I like Big Daddy's BBQ on Westheimer just east of hwy 6. The inside looks more like a 50's style diner than your typical bbq joint, but it's clean and I really like their bbq sauce. The brisket, chicken, and hot sausage is particularly good. Also, if you ask for fries as a side, they deep fry them on the spot - nothing better than fresh hot fries. I've been meaning to check out Goode Company though.
I completely forgot about that place. Thanks for deciding for me where I am going to go for lunch today!!
