I heard on the news last night that Berkman said once spring training starts, there will be no contract talks. I hope that we lock him up so he doesn't end up heading for greener pastures when his time comes.
Not any news of consequence. Arbitration hearings end before the start of spring training. The only option being eliminated is LB going to arbitration, then signing a long term deal afterwards. Since that isn't something the Astros do, no problem.
i think the arbitrator should take a few mill off his contract b/c he was a dumbass and messed up his knee playing flag football..... seriously, who plays flag football and injures there knee that bad....
In my opinion, unless Berkman REALLY wants to stay in Houston, we better lock him up this year or he is gone. Berkman is the type of hitter(patient, draws walks, lots of power) that both the Red Sox and the Yankees drool over. Both teams have mediocre 1st baseman, so Berkman fits perfectly. If Beltran could manage such a big payday with the Yanks and the Sox both not bidding, it's hard to imagine the money Berkman can command on the open market next year.
The first reports i heard that it was a church function. unless they came out and said they were just playing for the hell of it in the church. If that's the case i will retract my siding with him and call him a moron too hehe.
Is he not allowed to have a life outside of baseball? Hell he could have injured his knee coming out the shower...at least he did the smart thing and took care of it right away. And I dont see any reason to not have him locked up before spring training... just get it done!
Just about every MLB contract has a clause prohibiting activities like BMX racing, basketball tournaments, and playing football. In many cases, getting injured during one of these activities causes the contract to not be guaranteed.
No, IMO. There is no cutting and overall there is less pressure on the joint (unless you are a catcher). The biggest things Berkman should be worrying about is getting the strength back in the surrounding muscles and flexibility back in the knee. He will have some lingering pain. It won't be like football or basketball where it usually takes another year after you start playing to be at full strength. Baseball just doesn't require the strain on the knee like other sports.
What? There is tons of cutting and SLIDING in baseball. And Lance is an outfielder where he has to run down fly balls, balls in the gap, and sinking liners. Baseball is arguably worse than basketball, because of all the starting and stopping. Biggio did the same thing to his knee, and he came back ok, albeit much slower. DD
I agree that there's a lot. Wouldn't say it's worse though. I think baseball and basketball are about equal if you're an OF. Football worse than both of course. Lance will be back. Gotta bring him along slowly, make sure to work it back to full strength. I'd be fully against playing him everyday beginning of season, even with medical clearance
Basketball is much, much harder on a repaired knee. Not even close. Biggio's knee was worse, I believe there was an additional ligament or 2 involved, and the meniscus too. Lance's is a straight forward ACL tear. He'll be fine.
I've torn my ACL, and I can vouch for this. I didn't have any problems roaming the outfield (CF) after the surgery, but I can tell a big difference on the basketball court. In fact, I suffered two more injuries (second torn ACL and torn Achilles) since the first ACL -- both were also from hoops. Never hurt myself playing baseball since my first injury, though. Having said that, I could see this being the final straw in putting Lance at 1B for good once Bagwell's done.
