I'm surprised I'm the first to post this: UT's Benson faces drug charges 04/29/2002 Associated Press MIDLAND, Texas - Texas running back Cedric Benson, the Big 12 freshman of the year last season, was arrested on misdemeanor drug and alcohol possession charges over the weekend, police said. Benson was charged with possession of mar1juana under 2 ounces and drug paraphernalia and being a minor in possession of alcohol at a Midland apartment about 2 a.m. Saturday morning when police responded to a call about loud music. Benson, 19, was taken to the Midland County Central Detention Center and released after posting $1,365 that morning. "We weren't targeting him or anything," Midland Police Sgt. Dale Seago told the Midland Reporter-Telegram. "Nobody really knew who was who," until Benson was booked, he said. Initially, the people inside resisted letting Officer Jeff Handley into the apartment, but he eventually was allowed inside where he found alcohol and mar1juana. "The mar1juana was in a couple of places," said Midland police spokeswoman Tina Jauz. Melanie Robinson, 20, also was arrested on drug and paraphernalia possession charges as well as a minor in possession of alcohol, Midland County Sheriff Gary Painter said. She was released from the Midland detention center Saturday after posting bail of $1,365. School officials said coach Mack Brown would not comment on the arrest. "We are aware of the situation and right now we are gathering all the facts. Obviously, it is a legal issue and because of that there isn't anything further we can say," said team spokesman John Bianco. "We will handle it as we handle everything else within the team and respond when it is worked out in the court system," he said. If convicted on the mar1juana possession charge -- a Class B misdemeanor -- Benson faces up to a $2,000 fine and six months in jail. The paraphernalia and minor in possession of alcohol charges are Class C misdemeanor offenses and carry up to a $500 fine each. Benson set a Longhorns freshman record last season when he gained 1,053 yards on 223 carries and scored 12 touchdowns. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers and is expected to play in the minor leagues this summer. --- http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/topstories/stories/0430benson.3975019d.html
Doesn't look like that big a deal, lots of people (myself included) do some pretty stupid things when they're that age. Hopefully he'll realize that he's got waaaaaay too much going for him to jeopardize it this way. From everything I've been told by people who know/have met him, he's a real good kid.
The Mack Brown solution (according to a HornFans poster): First, they pin the possesion charge on the unlucky gal that was with him. Second, Mac slaps him on the tail and says "don't let it happen again". Third, he has to run stairs for an hour or so while MadDog eats nachos, corndogs, and drinks beer laughing at him. Fourth, Jimmy Jack Bob Johnson visits the judge and gets the MIP dropped. Fifth, Mac makes a statement to the media to the effect of "Everyone else on the team is on a Zero Tolerance Policy concerning Drugs". Last, Ced gets 17 carries for 46 yards. Losses one fumble. Against the OKlahoma Sooners.
I thought this was going to be about New Orleans Saints Owner Tom Benson, and I couldn't figure out what an old guy like that could do to get arrested.
If Benson is found guilty, he's looking at suspension. How long? It's anyone's guess. No Benson for an extended period, and we can can kiss this season goodbye. Simms needs Benson. Hopefully it doesn't come to that.
Yup. I don't think any of them played another game for UT, either! Of course, 1 or 2 were Seniors and none were superstar recruits either.
What ever did happen that got Kwame Cavil and company suspended from the Cotton Bowl? They were so quiet about it that I never found out.
Don't know if he's been in trouble before, but if not he'll get deferred adjudication, serve no jail time, pay a fine & be on probation for a year. I doubt he gets suspended from the team, but if so it'll only be for a game (opener is against North Texas).
Growing up in southeast texas, I couldn't go a day without watching Benson at 5:00PM on Channel 12 in Beaumont. Favorite Benson quote: Clayton, they could put your brain in the belly-button of a Barbie doll and still have enough room for three raisinettes and a list of your past accomplishments. BTW Elvis, I've heard bits and pieces of that new album and I'm kinda diggin' it.
Is loud noise enough for cops to invade the apartment? I guess so...seems like it should be illegal. Why didn't they just say keep it down and possibly write them a ticket? Man I hate cops. Now, if they smelled it, then that's a legit reason but loud noise? Maybe they did smell it. Their pretty stupid doing illegal drugs and making alot of noise. That is probably the most common way people get busted is cause their too stupid to realize how stupid their situation is. How many times have we read a story of someone being busted for loud music who is lighting up in their pad? The two just do not mix well. Do people think they can make as much as noise as they want and cops aren't going to come because the neighbors will take it like their on the receiving end of a pass(up the arse no less(aka wide receiver))? Next time they might decide to keep it down....if there is a next time.
He will get defered adjudication, and as soon as his probation is up the charges will be dismissed. DaDakota
