Anyone been? Planning a 5 day trip for late August with wife and another couple. What to do? Where to go? Should I bring a hurricane strength raincoat? Only thing planned is a short stay at the Blanceneaux lodge. Any help would be appreciated
I have never been, but scuba diving is very good down there. You can do a shark dive too. Let the little kids take your photograph for money. Enjoy the view. It is supposed to be spectacular.
Damn, I was hoping this was a thread with a pic of the chick wearing the Belize shirt at the Spurs game the other night.
* feel the rush of adrenaline as you dive into the welcoming waters of the Caribbean, * hike under the shade of the rainforest canopy and accompanied by melodious birds while tracking the elusive jaguar, * soak up some s, s and s (sun, sea and sand) while relaxing on the beach of our island, * observe stalactites and stalagmites in caves littered with pottery and the remains of Maya sacrifices, * canoe down a wild forest while observing rare and protected wildlife, * go island hopping while kayaking between the cayes on one of our three atolls, * catch a spectacular sunset while sitting on an ancient Mayan temple above the jungle canopy, * watch the kids snorkel with rays and nurse sharks * take refreshing dips in rivers or under cascading waterfalls, * exchange vows with the Caribbean Sea lapping at your feet, * swap stories back at the resort after a day of wrestling with permit, tarpon and bonefish, http://www.travelbelize.org/do.html
Also, never buy or eat watermelon, the indigenous inject them with bad water to make them heavier. You'll get sick.
We went for a short week in Ambergis Cay more than one hurricane ago. Awesome then. Small , quiet (except for the little airport out your back door three or four times a day) SAFE! There were platoons of British trained troops jogging around the little town's sand streets. The reef is just a short boat trip.
definitely go to the blue hole to dive for the day -- the scenery on the canyons is better nearer to ambergis cay, but diving at 11000 ft when it's pitch black under a collaspe cave with sharks swimming beneath you is not to be missed. you can take one of the day trips inside to the mainland and check out the mayan ruins.. but guatemala i think has better options.
The owner of the company I work for owns a little place down there, people around the office say that we get to use it whenever we want if he doesnt want it first.. never been there, but I look forward to going.. Let us know how it is if you go..
Enjoy the Beliken beer. I was in Belize as part of a 7 day cruise. Our excursion was cancelled, so we spent 3 hours drinking Beliken beer at "The Wet Lizard". Have fun.
I've been. Definitely spend some time on the coast / barrier islands. Good snorkeling / scuba diving, great fishing, relatively laid back beach atmosphere. Inland, there are a bunch of excursions you can do...try some sort of cave float, there are a number of cave systems, jungle walk - do this with a guide, one who knows about plants, animals, etc. of the region (we went on a couple, one geared specifically to the medicinal properties of the plant life, one at night hopeing to spot a jaguar, etc.), mayan ruins, etc.
I'm planning my honeymoon and doing a lot of research on Belize. Check out tripadvisor.com Not sure if I'm gonna get to do a lot of excursions though. Just really looking for a nice room with a nice view.
I went there for a cruise too. The cave tubing was pretty neat. Also had some Belikin beer. Good stuff!
My parents just got back today from a cruise and they stopped off in Belize, said it was really nice. Gasoline there costs over $8.00/gallon. My dad was talking to one of the locals there about this, and the guy said that their are a lot of BMW's in Belize because of the unbelivable gas prices. My dad was a little confused until the guy smiled and told him BMW = Black Men Walking.
My wife and I went to Belize for a week in 2003 and had a good time. I wrote a journal about our trip that you can check out. It's full of pictures and stuff that we did. My Belize Vacation Another website that has a good message board that is frequented by people who live on Ambergris Caye is Ambergriscaye.com You can ask (or just read other people's) questions about Ambergris Caye or other places in Belize plus it has links to all sorts of things to do. email me from my webpage if you have any questions.
I should probably add that Blancaneaux lodge is on the mainland but most of the replies (incuding mine) have been about staying on Ambergris Caye (an island off the coast). If you do go to Blancaneaux see if you can arrange a caving expedition. They have caves in Belize where you have to hike through the jungle to get to (including forging streams) and swim through pools to get inside. There you will find Mayan artifacts (including human remains) where they were left centerues ago. These caves are not developed and the trip would be rugged but talk about an adventure! Here is a link to some things you can do on the mainland.... Adventures in Belize Note: I have never used the above company. I'm just providing the link to suggest examples of what can be arranged.
