Portland is currently #8 in the Western Conference with a record of 13-13. The Rockets are currently 8-20 and only 6 games out of the last playoff spot.

I thought for sure that our playoff chances had eroded with our losing streak, but since I took the time to actually look at the records in the Western Conference I am very optimistic for our chances when Francis comes back.

Did anyone else realize we were only 6 games back?

I'm with you on this one. I still believe the Rockets have a shot at the eight spot only if we can go on a couple of 7 or 8 game winning streaks. Also if the injusry bug doesn't plague us all season.

Our record is (8-20) and we are not better than blazers, suns or even utah so we dont have a good chance , i would perfer to suck for the rest of the season get a superstar center in the draft and than win the title next year .

You dont give up after 30 games. Rockets are going to try and make a huge ass run. They have to start winning games in a row, no win , loss, loss, win, win. They got to catch up and I think they can do it if they play teamwork and rudy brings a play book instead of a coloring book.

I predict losses over next few games and then a major winning streak. Rockets end up in 9th place by 2 games and get the final lottery pick again.

LA Fadeaway, I wouldn't be surprised if you're right and we finish within five games of the last spot. I think the Rocks will do better, make a few nice runs, but then very possibly fall short. If we're only six games out, we can make it, but we really can't afford not to win the games we can. To equal our record from last year, we'd have to go 37-17, winning more than 2 out of every 3 games. I think we could do it, if everyone were healthy and getting comfortable by February, but I'm not optimistic. Cross your fingers. Go Rockets!

But did you notice that we are only 2.5 games behind the Bulls for the worst record (#1 pick).

    6 vs 2.5

I would go for the worst record and get a good pick. Next year the rockets will be even more competitive.

I root for them to win every game, but realistically, you can not lose 15 in a row in one season and make the playoffs, it has never happened, and won't this year either.

When I look at a healthy Rockets lineup, I can't help but think of the playoffs.

    Francis-Norris
    Mobley-Torres
    Thomas-Rice
    Griffin-Williams
    Cato-Willis

    That is a playoff team.

We could potentially make up serious ground with Francis back if the team can gel togehter quickly. But I wouldn't get too excited yet.

guys, we're looking at an 8th seed, an upset of the Lakers in round one then a heart-filled battle to the NBA title this year.

I can just imagine the little summary of the rockets season before game one of the finals:

"...But for Houston the season has been a different story. Plagued by merciless debacles on and off the court, the Rockets suffered a 15-game losing streak without stars Francis, Taylor, and Rice. They eventually overcame these obstacles, however, and entered the playoffs. They shocked the world with the historic upset of the #1 seeded Lakers, as the image of Francis and Mobley jumping all over each other will be forever cemented in every NBA fan's mind. And now, they have done the impossible. They have made it here to the Finals against the Raptors and an old Dream. Game one...next, on NBC."

I think the key for the Rockets is to set themselves up for a second half push by reaching that 500 mark by the all-star break. If that happens and the western conference teams keep up a competitve balance in the standings then we'll have a legitimate shot.

I agree Rocketbooster , a .500 record by all star break would be a start. Even when healthy, I don't know if this team is playoff caliber in the west. Other than Portland and Phoe being disfunctional and Utah being old, we're not just better than anyone. Even a team like Seattle and Denver has as much if not more talent than us. Golden St isn't that bad either and what i thought were gimmie games against Memphis , has turned out to be a dangerous team. There are no easy wins in the West, period! It makes for good games, but it doesn't help us if you're a Rockets fan.

Unlike last year, I think a .500 record will get an 8th or possibly even a 7th seed into the playoffs. As bleek as it may look for the Rockets, I'm not ruling anything out right now. We've been ravaged by injuries, but Utah and Portland suck while Phoenix and Seattle are inconsistent. We're pretty far back, but not completely out of reach. Don't be suprised to see a 10 game winning streak before the season is over.

RocketPimp- I'll be surprised especially if the teams during that stretch are western conf teams. Its not a team in the west that you can say we're that much better than other than maybe Memphis and they dealt with us. Even healthy, its hard to get streaks that long unless you're the spurs, kings, or lakers. Even after losing to us, the next night Milw beat the spurs in SA! I'm a wishful fan, but not that wishful.
