i really don't think the music industry had enough political clout to push this through.

    i think it's a bluff.

I think this thread would get a stronger response in the Hangout, but here is what I think...

I am disturbed by this in the sense that it has been negotiated in such cloak and dagger type situations and that no warrant would be required for a search and seizure at borders. To me, if the copyright holders really want to go after pirates, go after those profiting from their property first, as it has long been a long-time scourge. I say this with the fear that such things as mix tapes, albums borrowed from friends, or albums that I have purchased and thusly ripped to my computer for use on an iPod would be deemed "copyright infringement" and level me with some kid of fine, destruction of my personal property, and some kind of charge.

Personally, I would rather that governments be working on something else other than helping out the recording industry, which is fully responsible for its own demise, or the motion picture industry which has yet to adapt to the digital age (but is doing it faster than the recording industry). These people were simply blindsided by technological innovations and continue to drag their feet on how to react.

    honestly i'm not surprised.

the trend these days is for governments to ignore what their people want.

For example, look at the new EU treaty that got Ireland kicked out of the EU - a good number of prominent EU countries voted down the new EU treaty (which is just a repackaged constitution that was already downvoted) in referendums, including France - whose politicians are a major sponsor of the treaty, and instead of dropping it the politicians are going to cram it down everyone's throats even though people don't want it.

It's stupid that they're trying to make a big deal out of it and criminalize it like crazy; it'd be like having a treaty to hire 10x more traffic cops and arrest everyone who drives over the speed limit.

    What???

No way that is true. And no one has turned it down. France turned down the constitution not the treaty. Aside from Ireland, there haven't been (and won't be) any referendums in any other countries regarding the treaty.

Ireland wasn't kicked out of the EU but there are a lot of people saying it should be; and also, the treaty is a slightly altered version of the EU constitution that was voted down and would likely be voted down again if EU member states were allowed referendums on it.
