South Korea has one of the world's lowest birth rates

South Korean government workers are being given an unusual instruction - go home and multiply.

At 1900 on Wednesday, officials at the Ministry of Health will turn off all the lights in the building.

They want to encourage staff to go home to their families and, well, make bigger ones. They plan to repeat the experiment every month.

The country has one of the world's lowest birth rates, lower even than neighbouring Japan.

    S. Korea is at a crossroad. Society becoming more westernized by the day while the standards really haven't.

Lack of job security combined with ridiculous employer expectations, and the pressure from immense competition + no maternity leave (lose your job; no FLMA), crazy cost of daycare, expensive private tutoring (unless you want your kid to be total FAIL) in order to a receive decent "education," which is pretty much the only driving factor for success in one of the most densely populated cities in the world.

So tell me.. Would you want to bring a baby into that kinda world? Korean couples say it isn't fair for children nowadays. It's stressful enough dealing with the pressures of surviving for themselves.

Hmmm, I'm South Korean. Already knew about low birth rate, but didn't know the situation was this bad?

But, sending employees home at 7 pm should help, right? ;)

I think I'll wait for the drunken post about how it should have been us Mexicans making babies and stabbing ourselves with our penises. Please post later on tonight, sir.

Their GDP per capita is 20K USD and living standard is decent by Western standards.
What you described is partly true, but that kind of reality exists in China and Japan too. Maybe the Confucius culture has something to do with it, so I don't think westernization contributes to the low birth problem in South Korea.

Confucius culture in modern day Seoul?

I'm just saying Koreans' priorities are changing.. ie. using their spare time to be more focused on individual events and the role of the person, rather than make a baby for the sake of continuing the family bloodline.
