Well, being known as the music guy around here, I got an email from someone who at one time was a very well-known personality here. I will just say that he is the "mystery poster" and I asked him if he wanted his identity revealed, but he said no. So I will respect his wishes, anyway, I wish I could take credit for this great idea but I cannot. The idea is this: We have had villain tournaments, best poster tournaments, etc but why not have (and Fatty you will probably have a stroke) a band tournament (being rock music and its various genres)? The mystery poster came up with his field along with seedings and I tweaked them a little bit. No solo artists were eligible for this tournament - so no Dylan, Peter Gabriel, Michael Jackson, Elton John, etc. Here are the seedings: 1 - Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd 2 - Eagles, The Who, Aerosmith, Queen 3 - Doors, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, ZZ Top, Metallica 4 - Van Halen, KISS, AC/DC, U2 5 - Rush, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Black Sabbath, Pearl Jam 6 - The Cure, Nirvana, Dave Matthews Band, Fleetwood Mac 7 - Grateful Dead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ramones, Motley Crue 8 - Guns ' N Roses, REM, The Clash, Depeche Mode 9 - Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Pantera, The Band 10 - Styx, Deep Purple, The Smiths, The Cars 11 - Blue Oyster Cult, Beach Boys, Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR), Blondie 12 - INXS, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Sex Pistols 13 - Dire Straits, Thin Lizzy, Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead 14 - Chicago, B 52's, Stone Temple Pilots, Goo Goo Dolls 15 - Rage Against the Machine, Collective Soul, Foo Fighters, Green Day 16 - Tool, Cake, Incubus, Live Okay, I know there are going to be some questions why such and such bands did not make it (Motorhead, Judas Priest, Sigur Ros, King Crimson, Boston, Joy Division are some of my favorites that missed the tourney) but "mystery guy" with a little of my help tried to make this tourney as representative as possible of the more popular genres of rock in the last 40 years or so. The seedings were tough as well. However, you will always have questions about why so and so did not make it - that is part of the fun about doing a tourney. Anyway, I will get started with the first round tomorrow morning. We will try to move this thing along pretty quickly - maybe make it 24 hours to get your vote in, instead of 48 hours.
Def Leppard a #9? The Band a #9 ? Styx a #10 seed ? but Tool a #16? your seedings need some tweaking - Chicago a #14? They shouldnt even been in this conversation
Wow Manny. Usually your repetitive posts about music make me want to smack you in the mouth, but this one is awesome! I already have my votes ready to post!
dude, you forgot The Allman Brothers. definitely better and more influential then half the bands on your list.
The Pixies, Replacements and Talking Heads are out and the Goo Goo Dolls, Chicago and Blue Oyester Cult are in?? Come on, Manny!
And Manny, I give you a hard time about the music threads because they are on here so often. I love food, and I occassionally post a food thread. But if I posted a "Where did you go to lunch?" thread every two weeks, I'm sure I get heckled, as well.
Where are Cream, Yes and Grand Funk Railroad? I understand that Jimi might qualify as a solo artist, but it still pains me to not see him there. I mean come ON.
the list is FAR from perfect but it is what it is, you'd never please everyone anyway. i think without worrying about who's not there the seedings are okay. but how, as others have said, do we vote?
Blondie, Thin Lizzy, B52's, Collective Soul and Chicago??? Great idea, but those bands don't even deserve mention. Hell, I'd add foofoo Duran Duran over those bands. Where are the Police? NIN? The Pixies!?
So much anger and bitterness. I think it's a pretty good list. You're not going to please everyone. On the other hand, maybe we could come to some kind of consensus as to the bands that should be included that weren't, and maybe a list of bands that should be removed, by consensus. For instance, it seems like a lot of people want the Pixies on the list. Just something to think about.
