Superman vs. Batman Greenlit for a Movie

HOLLYWOOD (Zap2it.com) - Action movie director Wolfgang Petersen (“The Perfect Storm”) will be helming the long-awaited “Batman vs. Superman” film for Warner Bros. Pictures.

Written by Andrew Kevin Walker (“Seven”) the film will not be a continuation of the either the previous Batman or Superman movies, but rather a stand-alone with new introductions about the superheroes.

"It is a clash of the titans," Petersen told Variety. "They play off of each other so perfectly. (Superman) is clear, bright, all that is noble and good, and Batman represents the dark, obsessive and vengeful side. They are two sides of the same coin and that is material for great drama."

Though no actors have been cast yet in the title roles, Petersen is said to be eyeing Matt Damon for one of them.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, German-born Petersen admitted to being excited about working on a definitive American-culture story.

"As a European, it is challenging to do a project about these two American icons together in one movie," he said. "Growing up with American comics, to make a movie based on two of them is fascinating. I love it."

Meanwhile separate movies about the superheroes are still underway. “Superman” is being directed by McG (“Charlie’s Angels”), and “Batman: Year One” by Darren Aronofsky (“Requiem for a Dream”).

I'm sorry, but this sounds r****ded. And I'm worried that if this piece of CGI-dependant dung is released before Aronofsky's Batman Year One, nobody is going to see the latter. Which is a shame - Batman Year One is probably the best Batman book ever.

I don't know, man...personally I don't think it is possible to cast an actor for Superman that will seem natural. Christopher Reeves is the rightful superman, and I can't imagine anyone else in the uniform. Matt Damon might be okay, but he seems a little short to be superman.

On a side note, I think Pitt would be a good batman, as well.

I'm sure there were folks when Christopher Reeve was cast who were saying that George Reeves was the rightful Superman and no one else seemed natural.

And there may be younger people saying that only Dean Cain or Tom Welling looks right as Superman (though Tom Welling has never worn the suit. But he is currently playing Clark Kent).

True, mrpaige...I may grow to like whoever the superman is, but I would be surprised. At any rate, I think the story of this movie has great potential. My older brother has a big comic book style novel (drawn like a comic book, but in a large bound text) about this story, and it is excellent to read. The way the two both want the same thing, but go about it in different ways clashes, and makes for some cool battles between two guys that really don't want to fight each other. It will be a refreshingly different kind of superhero movie.

How could Batman possibly stand up against Superman unless he has secretly been powering all of his gizmos with kryptonite. I would like to see Edward Norton as Superman. He got huge for American History X (great movie about the idiocy of racism, as well as how racists can be hypocrites), so we wouldn't have the wimpy Superman ala Reeve or the horribly bad actor Superman ala Cain.

Speaking of vs. movies, when are we going to get Alien vs. Predator. That was a cool series of books and both movie franchises are kick-ass.

As long as they spare us another Clooney performance as the Batman it might actually be worth the trip to the theater.

As Rocket River mentions, they should just go with The Dark Knight Returns as the basis. You had Batman in his fifties, retired, but gets back into the game; a new (and female) Robin; and, what's more, great cameos: Selena Kyle (Catwoman); the Joker; Two-Face; et al.

Superman in the story is basically a neo-fascist of sorts, working for an ultra-conservative President, who is ordered to bring Bruce Wayne to justice. Their fight at the end...well, not to give it away, it kicks ass. The Green Hornet fires a kryptonite arrow that Clark/Superman grabs without thinking; that explosion robs him of much strength.

Ben is already doing Daredevil (which already has sequels before the first one is even released!)

    Batman: Jude Law
    Superman: Vin Diesel

So will Batman be the villain or what?

    Superman - Brad Pitt
    Batman - Edward Norton

    Back together again.

All I know is that, definitely, Superman will beat the crap out of Batman. Unless thats really bat-kryptonite in his jockstrap.

Batman is both smarter and more driven than Superman. That's what makes it a good matchup.

As for Affleck and Damon being obvious choices, um, whatever.

Batman should have been played by Clint Eastwood before he got too old. That's Batman. And that's why it's a good fight. Imagine Eastwood vs. the (definitive) Christopher Reeve Superman. That's a good fight.
