Can "Overshare" be far behind? [rquoter]“Unfriend” is Oxford Dictionary’s Word of the Year November 16th, 2009 | by Adam Ostrow9 Comments and 1124 Reactions It seems that “word of the year” announcements have become the de facto way for dictionary makers to grab some social media buzz by selecting a word from our neck of the woods. And sure enough, they’ve done it again, this time with Oxford Dictionary declaring “unfriend” the word of 2009. The definition of the verb is just as you’d expect: “To remove someone as a ‘friend’ on a social networking site such as Facebook.” Several other tech and social media centric word choices were considered, including hashtag, sexting, freemium, and paywall. Other words that have recently received the dictionary treatment include “Twitter,” which entered the Collins English Dictionary earlier this year, and “Facebook,” which was Collins’ word of the year back at the end of 2007. The tradition of picking a new media word seems to have originated back in 2004, when “Blog” made the top of Merriam Webster’s annual list.[/rquoter]
I saw this blurb while surfing the interwebs, so basso is being legit. It makes me wonder if the English language will remain recognizable, at least until I kick the bucket. I certainly hope so, but I'm not holding my breath (which might make me kick the bucket sooner, rather than the much later that I hope for). Considering the Fatty/Batman kerfluffle, I understand the use of his name in the title. basso wasn't trying to do anything insulting to Batman, in my opinion, or even Fatty.
yeah, I think a couple of years ago it was Babe-alicious. It was then I realized whoever got left in charge of this is not qualified.... regardless whatever publicity they're getting out of making a traveshamockery of the dictionary.
