I am on a rec league team with some good players, big bodies, a very good shooter, hard working players....but they don't get things like playing a 3-2 zone. we play it, but get busted because the 5 won't go out to the corner to cover it and that throws everything off.

How do you get a bunch of 25-35 year old men to figure it out? How do you get them to pass the ball instead of dribbling it around. Or how do set a weak-side screen.

I am not one to coach or tell people what to do unless it's my job to do so. I know how to play but man, have no idea on how to tell a bunch of guys where to go every time!

Are we doomed to play crappy team ball or is there a way out? Keep in mind these are guys who don't really want to see a clipboard or walk-through anything. It has to be done as we play.

Without practice, they are not going to JUST get it all of a sudden. They should be able to get together at least once a week to have some sort of practice.

Limit turnovers , and remember a bad shot is better than a turnover. Certain players need to know their roles. Big men set picks and not shoot long jumpers. Let anybody standing on the line shoot. I love when my opponent shoots the 22 foot 1.

    I agree.

Its just a rec league. Don't go Van Gundy on your teamates.

You could always try and play man on man.

it's not really a rec league, i just call it that because the refs are so awful it might as well be.

goal is to win. maybe i should quit and join another team.

Good luck, a lot of NBA coaches have been trying to solve that problem for a long time.

You on the team . . .do you all have a coach?
If not. . . then maybe you have to step up
figure out how important WINNING is . . . .
    Practice and repetition

    not to be . . .uhm . . a jerk
but leaving the team to join a 'winning' team
    seems a bit like a frontrunner.. .
If you just want to get on a team that wins . . .etc. . .then go to the winning team
esp if you have no ties to this team.

Most times I am teamed with friends etc. . .
so it is more important for me to WIN WITH THEM
    than to win . .. . .

If these men are 25-35 and can't play a 3-2 zone defense there is no hope.

they can play it, but they just make dumb mistakes. like not rotating quickly enough.

We played a really good passing team, and should have resorted to man.

But what kills me is having teammates who don't even bother putting a hand up on D. Or dribbles on the perimeter for 5 seconds not going anywhere but trying to beat a guy off the dribble....make your move go pass! i just can't stand that stuff.

basketball IQ - I miss having teammates with it.

Isn't it funny how you can play pick-up games and sometimes just sense which guys have played organized ball before because they have the basic fundamentals down? Just really rudimentary things like rotating, help defense, recognizing passing lanes, etc.

I don't really know what else you can do besides giving them a couple basic tips like making sure they rotate and get some ball movement. Something you can say that usually makes it click in players' heads that like to dribble a lot and get nowhere is "you can move the ball through the air faster than the other team can move on the ground." You can tell them that they negate that advantage when they simply try to dribble around everyone.

If you don't have time to practice, then I would just play man and make sure to call picks and when to switch on the picks.

As far as guys pounding the ball into the ground, well, there's not much you can do about that.

You aren't going to get a higher level of play from these guys when they don't even realize the things they are doing are wrong.

And what about the short, fat guy with no skills who dives after loose balls and hustles up the floor? :D
