You have heard of all of these bands before.
They have come from rough lives and now want to take out their anger and frustration in their music. Unfortunately, they fail miserably in their attempt to make "original" and "inspiring" music.
We all know where their influences are from, because they are so blatantly obvious.

They WORSHIP the power chord crunch that Metallica practically put a stamp on.

They idolize Eddie Vedder's voice, with the oh-so recognizable tone to it.

They use Drop D tuning so much...its like hearing the same song over and over again.

    Their influences are so obvious:
    Metallica/Pantera/White Zombie
    NIN/Ministry/Prodigy
    Tool/Filter/Hum

and the most obvious: Rage Against the Machine

I dont think I need to list the bands that have jumped this (hopefully short) fad to fame and glory....

Unfortunately, I have to endure this crap on a daily basis with Austin's "New Rock" Alternative 101X..... Since when is Metallica's Enter Sandman "New" or "Alternative"?????

I don't listen to the radio much (thank god) but smetimes I do and had noticed this strange Eddie Vedder thing. It is usually painfull because it is batantly obvious that the singer's voice is not really like that...just trained. I don't know any band names, though.

Give me my blues and jazz and I give a big [IMG]

Ever notice how 3 Doors down's "Loser" sounds errily familiar to:
Alice in Chains' "Got Me Wrong"

Or how that Godsmack song...keep away from me (or something) has the same chord progression as:
    Filter's "Hey Man Nice Shot"????
(FYI, the lead singer from Godsmack sounds exactly like James Hetfield of Metallica)

I hope this fad dies harder than HAIR METAL!!!

We need some real bands (who actually have talent) to break MUSIC out of this heroin-induced, wanna-be tough guy, Korn-Bizkit, Kid Roach SLUMP....

Anyone else think that Fred Durst is a complete P*#$y??????

Korn has been around for a very long time now. Granted, with their "acceptance" by MTV over the past two years they have grown into one of those band you want to bash, so go ahead [IMG] But before that they were cool.

Where the hell is the Beatles or Rolling Stones of our day? Bands that consistently put out albums that people would buy on a regular basis....Kiss comes to mind....

These days its all one hit and then disappear...with a few exceptions of course

we dont have any "hero" bands like the 60's and 70's which made music great....For the past 3 years or so, I have been trying to find bands out of the radio niche..... and have learned to support the local scene, indie bands, and bands with little or no radio play.

    Prime example: Radiohead

    Drewdog what about Dave Matthews?

Would you consider them a "hero band"?

    whatever that is...

Absolutely......DMB is one of my favorites.....To me its amazing that a band with that much talent can be so popular in today's music scene....it just doesnt happen too often.

Need an example: Godsmack (no talent, yet loved by many)

Hey hey hey, now. Days of the New was a talented band. You don't see too many bands playing songs all acoustic anymore, do you? I wish their music had caught on more.

And as to your second comparison, why does everyone think that Godsmack sounds like Alice in Chains? It is true that Godsmack is an Alice in Chains song, but that is the only connection I see. They don't sound all that similar, and the vocals are very different. Alice in Chains was well known for harmonizing their voice with very melodic lyrics and singing... Godsmack just yells "Now go away..." for 4 minutes in each song.

Totally agree with that JayZ. I think Korn started the whole "Jump Band" trend that opened the door for Fred the whiney b**** and Papa Roach.

I used to love Korn back in HS. Their first cd is pretty good, unfortunately they seem lazy and just throw in cookie cutter songs that the "trendy" ppl like to be seen listening to.

Same thing happened to Metallica, they lost it after the black album. IMO their best songs were the instrumentals, WHAT HAPPENED TO THE INSTRUMENTALS!!?!?!?

I'm so happy Rage didn't fall into that trap!

Also I dont think the dude from Godsmack sounds anything like Hetfield.

    2 reason Godsmack sucks:

    1. Lead singer emulates James Hetfield of Metallica
    2. The verse of "Never misunderstand me....stay away from me...." or something is a rip off of Filter's "Hey Man Nice Shot"

    Hero Bands? Hmmmm.....

Stone Temple Pilots comes to mind -- they put out four wonderful albums, each one quite a bit better than the previous one.

Buckcherry kicks the whole ass -- go buy their new one....now.

Incubus is awesome -- granted I didn't get into them until "Pardon Me" but I'm glad I did. Their earlier work is just as good as "Make Yourself".

Foo Fighters too, 'cept I hated their first album.

    The Current Rock Scene --

...I don't mind it at all, I actually like some Limp Bizkit (Rearranged, My Way, Nookie, etc) and the one hit wonders seem to at least be contributing half decent songs.

I do, however, loathe Creed. They need to go away. Now.

    Agreed.

    Creed needs to die....
Another prime example (in my original post) of Scott Sapp being an Eddie Vedder wanna-be!

There are many good bands out there, it's just that the mainstream has no idea who they are. There will never be another Beatles or Stones because the mainstream has no interest in finding one. They'd rather nab the next Britney Spears or N Suck. You want some real rock n roll, go pick up a King's X or Enuff Z Nuff album.

Raven -- that wasn't a slight to AIC, they're top of the line. I was way into "Facelift" before any of my friends knew who the hell they were. Godsmack is a pure AIC ripoff though.

Stone Cold--I dug DOTN's first big song. Real dark, kinda cool. But there are 5-6 bands out there right now where if I hear one of their songs on the radio, you could tell me it was so-and-so and I couldn't argue. Nothing sticks out, they all sound the exact same. Creed, 3 Doors Down, DOTN...I can't tell the difference! Also, many people like to refer to STP as Clone Temple Pilots. I like their 3rd album the best.

Cliff Burton died. He wrote The Call of Ktulu(with Dave Mustaine), Orion, and To Live is to Die. (Anesthesia)-Pulling Teeth was actually written by Ron McGovney.

    TheFreak --

Right on about the faceless band thing -- not only do many of the bands sound like each, but most of their own songs sound the exact same (SEE: 3 Doors Down).

I don't think any of these bands are the second coming but I wouldn't change the radio if say, Lifehouse or 3 Doors Down came on.

I've heard the Clone Temple Pilots thing too -- Core's owes much to Pearl Jam but the album can stand on its own. I can name 6 tracks off that album right now superior to any of the crap on the radio ('Sin', 'Dead and Bloated' anyone?). I wonder, though, what would've happened had STP dropped Core before Ten, if then people would've calling Vedder a Weiland clone.

Anyways, you're the first person I know who actually liked Tiny Music (besides myself). #4's my favorite but that defintely runs a close second.

I knew he died, but I had no clue he wrote those songs. Damn that sucks. The call and orion are a couple of my all-time fav songs.

BGM, and I guess everyone else,

I see your beef with alot of these bands. but two specificly need to be addressed. Limp Bizkit, and poppa Roach. here is why. sure there is a decent amound of rippig off going on here, but its not so much the music, but the message. dirst is a jackass, but his music speaks to the angry young kids out there that like both rap nad metal fusion. for me it was the offspring that let me scream my head odd, and it was Nirvana that got the job done in HS.
these arnt in any way ripoffs of metalica. they offer the same service to the kids, yes(break ****) but they are not musicly too close. if ya are gonna get all technical you could say they are all biting off chuck bary, or even bands like sabath in the more recent, but lets not be music snobs.

NOT ALL OF LIMPS STUFF IS GOOD, but they have a few songs that absolutely talk to the voices in your head, and make you want to smash your bosses face in. we need that. Papa Roach has the most effective scream along with song since Lithium-Nirvana.

dont knock it, because these guys are better anger management than playing rugby was. [IMG] and besides only my throught hurts afterwards with the music [IMG]

    peace, and continue your ripping

(you guys must think Im crazy now, oh well at least I know Im crazy)

I'm down with old Korn stuff too JAYZ750, but it's painfully obvious that that last album was put out to rake in teenage cash. I'm not saying I wouldn't go for the cash if I had the chance, but it's kinda sad when a really cool band sell out like that. However, if you want to listen to the best album of the 90's you need to put in TOOL's AEINEMA. They're a little too far out there for most to like, but once you give it a chance you realize just how incredible the complete album is.
