So it's the top of the 9th inning, game tied 8-8 between Baltimore and New York. Suddenly it starts POURING down rain. I mean it's raining hard. So hard that water is pouring off of the batting helmets. The hitters can barely see and Joe Girardi goes out to the mound to argue that the game should be delayed and the umps look at him and put there hands out as if to imply it's not that bad. So of course, the Yankees go down without scoring a run.

Then what? Instantly, the tarp hits the field. Now they are in a rain delay and it looks like it will be a long one. What were the umpires thinking? It was clear that the weather was impacting the ability to play the game. Heck, they even felt it was raining too hard to play, just not for the Yankees.

Even the Baltimore announcers were saying the umpires were out of line. Jim Palmer said "The Umpires have lost control of this game" and alluded to how awful it will be when once Hideki Matsui got out (which was obvious he would, he couldn't see) they'd put the tarp on.

How does baseball get away with this type of pure subjectivity?

I hate the Yanks as much as anyone but that does sound like BS to me. It sounds like the ump just wanted to make it to the break between innings to call for the tarp. I see that a lot when it starts raining and there's a forecast for more. But if it was raining as hard as you describe, it should have been suspended mid-inning. It sound like the Yanks got screwed out of an AB.

I think you're being a little bit ridiculous. At worst this is justice for the O's, as I can remember a game between the O's and Yanks last year where the umps let the game continue while the O's were struggling and then immediately aftewards called it. And that doesn't even begin to make up for the Jeffrey maier thing. Stop whining

Once they cut payroll by 100 million, I'll start seeing things from an unbiased point of view.

Wouldn't that just mean cutting a player for one year?

With the ticket prices they're going to charge at new Yankee Stadium, look for them to add $100 million to their payroll. First row behind the dugout is going to be $1,500 a game and a 4 year season ticket commitment. That's an annual commitment of over $120,000 per seat. First row upper deck behind home plate is going to cost $150. And those are the season ticket discount prices.

Oh lord. I guess I shouldn't have expected a reasonable discussion.
