Monday, Oct 22, 2007 6:27 am EDT Dana Barros, the former Boston Celtics and Boston College star, has come back on board as a member of the team's community relations department after a brief stint in a similar position at City Hall. There may also be an expanded role for him, perhaps in basketball operations. Though for Barros, who still hasn't lost the playing bug, it may not be the one he wants. "I wouldn't try it anywhere else, but I'd come back here to play," Barros said. I swear if I hear another retired player aiming a comeback.. I'd shoot myself. Or maybe I should shoot them instead.
If you were on NBA JAM in 1993.... mmmmm not gonna happen. Although as a quasi-Bostonian it's nice seeing players come out of the woodwork wanting to make the Celts what they should be. The Lakers have hogged a bit too much of the spotlight in the last 2 decades. It's just too bad the Celts are going down to the Rockets in 6.
Which is why it's very puzzling to me why they want to ruin that legacy by coming back. Not even Michael "the best player to ever play the game" Jordan looked too good when he came back. Dictator Stern should really make players stay out once they retire. Please Dr. Stern, I know you're reading this!
You're right, he should have forced MJ to stay retired the first time. Dude only was tarnishing his legacy by coming back and leading his team to 3 (more) titles, and the best single season record of all time.
If anyone should come out of retirement to play for the Celtics, it should be Larry Legend. The white Jesus of basketball! Do it Bird! DO IT!
haha...On his second return, it seems he left another legacy. Just like how his Air Jordans caught on, now he has started a new trend: making vain comeback attempts to the NBA.
This guy can lighttt it up. Man, I remember all those bad ass shooters back in the day... Barros, Mitch Richmond, Dale Ellis, Glen Rice... those guys were lights out
Now I think we both know that I was talking about his comeback to the Wiz. When I was talking about players retiring, I was talking about them hanging their shoes for good because of age or fulfilled their tenure in the NBA. If Dictator Stern would implement that players would think twice about taking a break or what not, which I think is what MJ did. He was still in his prime to be retired then. We can debate this forever and that's not where I'm trying to get. My point it, yes, there is that one exception of MJ's first "retirement," but I still think that Stern should do something to minimize these useless returns. It's embarrassing for the player (in most cases) and it doesn't really improve the game. Outside of MJ's exception, the only good thing that usually comes out of this is the player gets some extra cash or he gets to play some more 'for the love of the game.' The older folks should just sit back and enjoy the game and let the younger players play and get more PT.
I remember player on NBA Live 97-99.. can't remember which. I remember being so upset that they didn't have MJ.
I don't see how Jordan tarnished his legacy playing for the Wizards. At age forty he was still one of the best players in the league, dropping 40 and even 50 point games. I don't see a person of Dikembe's age being a superstar in the NBA. The guy was not human.
