Barkley Should Just Play Another Year, Screw One Game

Conventional wisdom would seem to say this could totally stunt our 'rebuilding effort', but I can't tell you how much I'd love to see Barkley come back for another year. Sign him to another one-year deal for about the same as he's making now. We don't have the cap room next year anyway. Think of the positive ramifications for another arena vote? Everybody would be so pumped about the coming year, it being Charles' last year and all. Draft a small forward in the draft, and have KT learn for another year under the Chuckster while still getting 20-25 minutes a game. When you think about it, it makes a ton of sense. (consider what the beer drinkin, ra-ra sports fan in you would want.) If you think it may be a waste of time, with the Rockets ending up a middle-of-the-road team that's neither rebuilding nor contending, look at what Rudy & Co. have been able to accomplish this year with a front line of Williams-Miller-Bullard. Could anybody else win 19 games in a whole year with that lineup? Imagine a front line next year of Barkley-Cato-#1 draft pick with Olajuwon and KT off the bench. That team's got home-court in the first round of the playoffs written all over it, while still being a team dominated by young perimeter players at the same time. The net result is a team competing and contending at the same time, which makes it much more fun for the sports fan. We still get our 'savior' from the draft this year that everybody seems to want, and we add a pretty good talent next year at the 4 spot as well. Doesn't Charles deserve a better ending? What do you think?

I know people who know Charles and have spoken to him myself once or twice (mild acquaintance). I have heard that he has been joking about coming back (more and more lately), and the guy has too much pride to go out like that(injured). It would not be the first time he renegged. Do not be surprised at all if he comes back. (I somehow think no one will be)

I hope you're right b-ball freak. I wonder if the organization would even want him for another year though? Do you think Rudy's tried to convince him to play again? Something tells me they're not too upset about him retiring at this point. I just don't think it would hurt that much to have Thomas come off the bench for another year, especially if we take a 3 in the draft. Cato would get to start, as would Francis, Anderson, and the draft pick. There's always one or two veteran role players in the starting lineup for any team. I just think it would be so much fun to win a bunch of games next year, while still basically being a rebuilding team. I wish someone would try to convince him to come back....I wouldn't think it'd be that hard to do.

I agree with you whole-heartedly, TheFreak. It would be great to have Barkley coming back for one more year. Do you think it could also have a positive influence on Hakeem's decision whether he will come back for one more year?

Although I am not sure if CB4 would come back or not, wouldn't it make a great farewell tour for CB & Dream together! I know there was talk that Dream wanted to go out this year w/ Charles, and this would be an excellent way to accomplish it, if CB was interested.

If he's up to it, I think it would be great! We would end up in the playoffs next year, and the rookies would get a lot of good training under their belt for the future. We'll end up in the playoffs next year anyway, so we won't get a higher draft pick. It will be more important to build a winning, confident attitude and build playoff team play than even getting more pieces to the puzzle. CD and Rudy are always able to come up with a big trade.

I suggested this earlier in the year before Dream and Barkley got injured, and the problem was that they got in the way of the rebuilding process. But now Francis has made this his team and his style, and Dream and Barkley would play to his strengths, giving the team a chance to go pretty far, you never know, they might just go all the way for Barkley. They did it for Clyde. I'd love to see Barkley go out that way.

Well I guess I may as well be the lone dessenter amoung the group.

    1. I hope Charles stays retired. Thanks Chuck. Loved your court play. Hope you don't come back and injure yourself worse. We are talking possible lifetime "lame-city" here folks. As in crippled with a limp and a cane and limited golf abilities. Real life issues. This was NOT called a "career ending type of injury" because it makes great media copy.

    2. If Charles is anything he is not stupid. He does not need the pre-middleage-fling like buying a new corvette, flashing the teen boppers and playing past a point of safe and practical athletics to prove he is a worthy athlete. If anything, IMHO, it would harm his memory. Charles as a whimper and gasp between sparse shifts in his final year, plagued by minor injuries and aches and pains, leading a talented team to an underacheiving season. For what. So Charles can say he did it?

    3. Now (don't start any of that "true fans don't say such and such business.....but,) we do not need Charles. If anything the injury to Charles was a godsend. It moved us forward without the telltale resistence that such a major change would have created. Hakeem's injury helped us blend and evolve even further. Charles would hinder the team right now. Do we need his expertise and lockeroom presence? Yes. Most definitely. Do we need him rebounding and handling the ball? Sorry Charlie. Nope. You would be redundant as difficult as that may seem. Imagine what he would look like, what he would say and feel when he finally realized made a mistake. That he should have stayed retired.

I also think CB should come back for another year. Earlier this season, he was schooling TIM DUNCAN on the offensive end, and he gives up about 7 inches. Popavich told Duncan that Barkley was the hardest person he would have to try to guard. Charles says he wants to retire while he is at the top of his game. I say good, that means you have at least one good year left! [IMG]

Chuck won't be coming back. I heard from a reputable source that he only wants to play the Vancouver game in order to announce his campaign as running mate for Bill Bradley in a tear-jerking end to his basketball career.

They will showcase his quick rehab as an indication the two do anything to live up to their promises and not letting down the public.

Then they will have a nostalgic one-on-one competition and both blow-out their knees again.

I, as a season ticket holder, would love to have Big Sexy come back for next season, but I don't think that this is in the cards.

Big Sexy has been battling injuries ever since he got to Houston. His aging body is telling him to quit. His last injury may have been a simple sprain five years ago. Now the injury is career threatening.

I think Big Sexy fully realizes that his body can no longer take the punishment of the NBA.

I know this might rub most of you off the wrong way, but Charles should stay retired.

Let's get out of the past, and move forward. This team has grown so much this year. Do you want to deflate these guys like that? Send Kenny Thomas back to the bench in favor of the aging vet? We are now independent of Charles and Hakeem...let's stay that way.

I also think coming back would hurt his legacy. Charles Barkley went down like a man and will always be remembered as a great player. Now it's time to move on and accept the fact that your time is up.

You know, it's not a coincidence that Charles Barkley has been injured every season since he got to Houston. Maybe, you know, his body is trying to tell him something.

Anybody think we'd still have the worst attendance in the NBA had the Rockets tried to convince Charles to play another year?

Look, we got Popeye, thacabbage, and hp in the same thread.

    don't forget DaDakota!

Wow Smeggy! If TheFreak continues pulling the nostalgia threads, I think we'll have a lot of fun during All-Star break. Hey...let's make this the nostalgia weekend.

    Call it..."The Dream Continues..."

Nothing like Dream playing great again to bring back some nostalgia.

How about a retrospect of your "greatest BBS moment"? We can all bring up a thread that has meaning for us.

(Ok, lame idea, but it's extremely boring at work tonight, and the non-comformists I work with (football fans) are watching the XFL.)

I would be very excited if Charles Barkley, my favorite basketball player of all-time, returns to the Houston Rockets!

I have all the faith in the world in CB4...but do you think he could lose all that weight he gained? [IMG]

To be exact, if he had to lose enough weight to run with this team, he'd have to lose around 75~100lbs.

And who says he CAN lose that much weight by next season and still have any energy? Who says he wants to play on a team that is not even a lock for the playoffs?

If he comes back, it's for the ring. I'd love to see Hakeem and Charles both sign on the same team ad win a championship just for CB4....

Like MJ said, he would have to lose alot of weight to play(he said 800, but im pretty sure thats impossible).

If he could turn in some time for a contender and pick up a title i would be happy.

But after you play for four teams, you kind of pick up a journeyman distinction. (he probably wont, but for other players, thats how many teams it would take.
