This has been talked about a little recently. What were some bands that remained successful, or even got better, despite replacing lead singers?

    Iron Maiden
    AC/DC
    Van Halen
    Faith No More
    Anthrax

All I can think of right now.

I'd say Van Hagar, but the gig was up when they did that album with the guy from Extreme, Gary Cherone. Wow, that album sucked! How about Styx and Journey? Not! Genesis was successful when they had their drummer singing, but when he left, it was cewtins (curtains in Bugs-speak) for them.

i really dont think Maiden retained their popularity quite as much without Bruce..I know I for one didnt like Blaze at all.

ACDC, without a doubt on that one. Bon Scott may have been a better frontman, but Brian Johnson ushered in a new era of popularity for them.

Van Halen got more popular when they replaced DLR with Sammy...but it was different kinds of people. A lot of the older fans didnt like the direction they went with Sammy...and alot of SH fans became VH fans just because he joined em.

In the end, I dont really think they sold better withour DLR..
but I didnt mind, I liked Sammy..I had been a fan before he joined VH and I was a huge VH fan from the early days.

Mike Patton isnt with FNM? when did this happen?
I really havent kept up with em since their secind album, so I hadnt heard.

Im not surprised that Anthrax got better, I mean geez, they got the guy from Armoured Saint...he is a flatout killer singer.

I have to admit tho, I prefer early Anthrax..
    Armed and Dangerous
    Among the Living
    and Spreading the Disease

another band that remained successful for a while after losing their singer..

    Black Sabbath

technically, Steve Perry wasnt their original singer.

so technically, Journey got much more popular after getting a new singer...

It's funny that they started out in SF as some kind of weird art-rock fusion band. They went from playing for people who liked to trip to playing syrupy ballads that FM radio loved and the metal guys hated.

Well one band that I think is NOT that good now compared to the way they used to be is Sepultura.

When Max left to form, I guess, Soulfly and they, the rest of the band, carried on without him, I think both parties suffered.

Interesting question, Freak, as I can think of WAY more bands that went in the opposite direction than what the question is asking (read Sepultura, Misfits, Styx, Judas Priest, etc).

I actually liked Journey alot up until Escape.

Their early albums were really good stuff..until the decided to pander to the little girls who only liked Journey because of Perry..

I was a fan of Schon, Valory, Smith and Rolie..Perry came a distant last...though you have to admit the man can sing..he has(had) a pretty good voice.

Chuck Moseley was FNM's first singer, and Bruce Dickinson wasn't Iron Maiden's first either (Paul something or other?).

Faith No More are no more, too.

weezer - yes, VH was extremely successful after DLR. Not AS successful, but still damn successful.

2k - Bailey answered this re: Maiden, FNM.

Manny - yes, there were more that went the other way, that's why it's neat to highlight the ones that were able to pull it off.

Yeah, that stuff was not the kind of thing that a MAN could have in tape collection in those days. Especially when said collection was filled with Judas Priest, Metallica, Faith No More, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Megadeth, Suicidal Tendencies, and other hardcore metal of the era.

Genesis.....after Peter Gabriel left. Hello Phil Collins, hello "Mama"

Pink Floyd lost Roger Waters and did quite well in 1988 with only Dave Gilmore doing vocals....although he was singing long before that.

By the looks of ticket sales, The Dead seem to be doing ok.

Mustaine was the original lead guitarist. Hetfield was always the singer. However, I think the vocals to certain songs - Jump in the Fire, the Mechanix (later the Four Horsemen) and Metal Militia - were written by Mustaine.
